At the start of 2018, Tecno – the offline smartphone brand of Transsion Holding – pledged that its future phones will at least have trimmed bezels. Staying true to its promise, the firm unleashed two new phones, Camon i and Camon i Air – both being affordable phones that sport full vision displays up front.

The Tecno Camon i was launched a couple of months back, and the Camon i Air is a further trimmed down and more affordable variant of the same with slightly smaller resolution selfie sensor and lesser storage. Both phones are meant to be picked at offline stores.

So, is Camon i Air a phone worth recommending? We managed to spend some quality time with the device and this is what we have to say about the Tecno Camon i Air based on our initial impressions.

Tecno Camon i Air Design and Build

The Tecno Camon i Air will tempt you with its design, as it looks far premium than the price tag would suggest. The phone comes clad in a neat metal finish plastic unibody – understandably so. The company has bundled a good quality TPU case with the phone as well. The back panel has smooth curved edges that lend it a comfortable grip.

We find the device very lightweight(134 grams) and comfortable to use even with single hand. The volume rocker and power button are rightly placed on the right edge whereas the headphone jack and speaker grill are placed on the top and bottom edge of the phone, respectively.

The fascia of the phone is all dominated by display while the rear panel has got the room for the primary camera with LED flash (both aligned at the top-right corner), and center aligned fingerprint sensor.

Tecno Camon i Air Display

The Tecno Camon i Air flaunts a 5.65-inch HD+ IPS display with 18:9 screen aspect ratio. The edges aren’t quite bezel-less, but they are definitely shrunk down. The display is sharp, vibrant and bright enough to be viewed in any lighting condition.

Moreover, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and comes with a pre-installed screen protector (a plus point).

Tecno Camon i Air Performance and Software

The Tecno Camon i Air is powered by 1.3GHz MT6737 quad-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Out of the box we didn’t notice any lag on the phone but this could change with time if you are a heavy user. The configuration is meant only for the most basic of users.

At the software front, the handset comes running on Android 7.0 Nougat with company’s HiOS skin on top. The UI is light, has its own set of animation, and most importantly, doesn’t come with many third-party apps pre-installed.

Tecno Camon i Air Camera and Battery

For shutterbugs, the Camon i Air features a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP selfie shooter both backed by LED flash. As per our initial impression, the images clicked by Tecno Camon i Air was good (not great), at places with ample lights. We will still need to test the camera some more before we arrive at a definite conclusion.

As for the battery, the Camon i Air is aided by 3,050mAh battery, which should at least last for a day on moderate usage. The battery is non-removable and doesn’t support fast charging.

Tecno Camon i Air Quick Review

The design and display are Tecno Camon i Air’s biggest plus point. The use of decent quality 18:9 panel ensures that it doesn’t feel dated, and the phone certainly looks good for the price. Other than that, the phone is one of the rare few that offers dedicated microSD card slot and LED flashlight on the front. We will need to use it some more to determine whether or not the performance holds.

Pros

  • Full Vision Display
  • Looks and Feels Good
  • Dedicated microSD card Slot

Cons

  • Limited storage
  • Mediocre chipset
