Smartprix People’s Choice Award 2018 – Winner Announcement

We are done with our vote counting and are now ready to announce winners of our Smartprix People’s Choice awards 2018. But before we do that, we would like to thank each one of you for making this a huge success.

In 10 day span, when the voting was open, more than two lakh people voted and voiced their opinions. The awards were divided across 12 categories and based on your votes, we have chosen one winner and two runner-ups in each category. Here we go.

Smartprix People’s Choice Awards 2018 Winners

Best Affordable Phone of 2018 (Under Rs 18,000)

This category saw real close competition this year. The Vivo V9 Pro (Review), which was one of first few Snapdragon 660 powered phones in this class emerged as the winner, but the first and second runner-up – Realme 2 Pro, and the Xiaomi’s Note 6 Pro – are equally impressive offerings.

Best Mid-range Phone of 2018 (Under Rs 30,000)

Many players tried to address the void in Rs. 20,000 – Rs. 30,000 price segment with impressively aggressive offerings. The Poco F1 (Review), which was and is the cheapest Snapdragon 845 powered phone around, scored the top spot followed by Vivo V11 Pro and Zenfone 5Z.

Best Economical Flagship Phones of 2018 (Under Rs 50,000)

This one was quite expected. OnePlus has a large online following in India and it was hardly a surprise that the 6T (Review) ranked for the position of best economical flagship phone this year. Flagship phones have indeed grown pricey, but we did see several competent economically priced flagships this year.

Phone of the Year (2018)

What about the no-holds-barred flagship phone of the year? Well, we are approaching 2019, yet we still don’t have a perfect phone. At the same time, flagships have grown really awesome and it’s really hard to pick one winner. Well, you guys picked the iPhone Xs/ Xs Max (Review). On the Android side of things, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro took the lead.

In spite of components getting more expensive, several manufacturers surprised us with competent entry-grade phones this year. And you picked Huawei’s Honor 9N as the best choice.

Cameras continue to be the biggest flagship differentiators and we can see manufacturers increasingly focusing on camera software to make a difference. Expectedly, Pixel 3 ranked first. The OnePlus 6T was surprisingly the second most voted option. We were expecting iPhone Xs or Mate 20 Pro to be the close second.

Not only flagships but photography on affordable phones saw a healthy growth this year. Xiaomi continues to dominate this segment. Mi A2 (Review) emerged as the winner and the Vivo V9 Pro was a close second. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 6 Pro also made it to the top three.

Best looking phone of 2018

We saw several revolutionary changes in smartphone designs this year. Essentially, manufacturers waged a war on bezels, which is why it isn’t entirely surprising that the winner is a phone that resorts to extraordinary measures just to include maximum screen real-estate. The Vivo Nex.

Best Gaming Phone of 2018

2017 was the year of Pokemon Go and this year PUBG was what kept most of us hooked to our mobile screens for hours at a stretch. Gaming on smartphones has emerged as a major trend and most brands have acknowledged the need by switching to more powerful chipsets throughout their portfolios. Many OEMs even introduced high-end devices dedicated to gaming. These are the nominees of the best gaming phone of 2018:

Vivo became the first manufacturer to bring in in-display sensors to India. It also quickly adapted to changing trends like notch-displays and included competent Qualcomm chips throughout its entire product portfolio in India. This is perhaps why it was voted the most innovative brand this year.

Most Disruptive Brand of The Year

Realme bagged the award for the most disruptive brand this year – a well-deserved win, we must say. Realme started off as an online arm of Oppo and has made rapid strides in the first few most of its operations in India. The brand brought about disruption by providing competent hardware at very reasonable prices.

Best Custom UI on Android Phones

The Oxygen OS won the award for the best custom interface on Android and by a wide margin. The OnePlus’ Oxygen OS retains stock Android essence while adding numerous handy customization options, and that’s what primarily makes it a favored option for all classes of users.
