Samsung Galaxy Watch with Wellness Capabilities and Tizen OS Launched

Samsung unveiled its new Samsung Galaxy Watch, yesterday, during the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 launch event that took place in New York. With this launch, Samsung has rechristened its Gear S series for wearables. The watch is available in 42mm and 46mm variants, each having a different battery capacity and resolution. The company has also introduced a Wireless Charger Duo during its event, that lets one charge their Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Watch simultaneously, apart from its smart speaker, Galaxy Home. The smartwatch broadly covers two user needs- Health and Time checking.

On the sidelines of the event in New York, DJ Koh, President-CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics said “The new Galaxy Watch was designed for all lifestyles to help meet consumer needs, such as more efficient battery life to stay connected longer, and better wellness tracking to help users maintain their goals – we are delivering them with connected experiences, all at the touch of a wrist.”

Samsung Galaxy Watch specifications

Starting with the key specifications, the new Galaxy Watch comes with an LTE connectivity with over 30 carriers and more than 15 countries, as well as wellness capabilities. Another essential component of this smart-watch is its durable battery life, with 80+ hours life (normal usage) on a single cycle of charge for the 46mm variant, and 45+ hours life on its 42mm variant. Although OS based watches are infamous for their poor battery health, this one raises the bar with 6 days battery life.

In terms of wellness capabilities, the Samsung Galaxy watch features a unique stress management tracker, which helps automatic detection of high stress level and suggests breathing exercises. It also functions as your personal fitness assistant by laying out 21 new indoor exercises and enables tracking of 39 workouts. A sleep tracker that reads all depths of sleep, including REM cycles is also present in this smartwatch. A calorie tracker and personalized alerts to keep a tab on one’s nutritional facts are its other features.

The 46mm variant sports a 1.3-inch Super AMOLED (360×360) display, and 472mAh battery. Measuring 46x49x13mm, and 63 grams weight, this watch comes with 22mm interchangeable strap provision. As for the 42mm variant, it features a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED (360×360) display, and measures 41.9×45.7×12.7mm and has a similar strap support.

This watch offers some of the most assuring features on its durability front, like water resistance” at 5 ATM, and Corning Gorilla Glass DX+ protection. It also has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

Samsung has employed a dual-core Samsung Exynos 9110 SoC (clocked at 1.15GHz), 1.5GB RAM for the LTE variant, 768MB RAM for the Bluetooth-based variants, and 4GB internal memory in general.

Connectivity options on the watch include 3G/LTE, Bluetooth v4.2, Wi-Fi b/g/n, NFC, and A-GPS. Sensors on board comprise of an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, gyroscope, and heart rate monitor. Both the variants support WPC-based wireless charging and compatibility with mobiles that run Android 5.0 (and higher) or iOS 9.0 (and higher).

Samsung Galaxy Watch price

The starting price for the Samsung Galaxy watch is pegged at $329.99 (approx Rs. 22,600) for its 42mm variant and goes up to $349.99 (approx Rs. 24,000) for the 46mm variant. The smartwatch will be out for sale in India, on September 14, this year. The above prices are for the watch’s Bluetooth variant. The price for its LTE variant has not yet been announced.

Onyx Black, Deep Ocean Blue, Basalt Grey are the strap options available on the watch’s 46mm variant with Silver body, whereas the 42mm variant has Midnight Black and Rose Gold options for its body, and Onyx Black, Cosmo Purple, Pink Beige, Cloud Grey, Lunar Grey, Terracotta Red, Lime Yellow, and Natural Brown options for its straps (manufactured by Braloba).
