Samsung hosted its Part 2 of the Galaxy Unpacked Even yesterday. During the event, the brand launched Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 along with Watch 6 Series, and Tab S9 Series. Samsung has laid maximum emphasis on the next-generation Flip smartphone as the brand claims it comes with significant upgrades over its predecessor. Thus, it becomes imperative to assess if the upgrades Samsung is talking about are actually worth it.

Performance

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes with a huge performance upgrade as it is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset for Galaxy, whereas the Galaxy Z Flip 4 was equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor. Both devices offer multiple storage variants, but while Galaxy Z Flip 4 storage began with 8GB RAM and 128GB memory, the Flip 5 starts at 8GB RAM+256GB onboard memory, thus ensuring users have ample space for their data and applications. There is also an 8GB+512GB storage model for Galaxy Z Flip 5.

However, the standout improvement lies in the Z Flip 5’s processing power, featuring an Octa-core CPU with higher clock speeds, making it a powerhouse for seamless multitasking and smooth performance.

Additionally, the Z Flip 5 is accompanied by an Adreno 740 GPU, further enhancing its graphical capabilities. In contrast, the Z Flip 4 is supported by an Adreno 730 GPU. With a focus on enhanced performance, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 clearly has an edge in numbers.

The Flip 5 boots on the latest Android 13 OS out of the box while Flip 4 came with Android 12 as it launched last year. The Galaxy Flip 4 did get an Android 13 upgrade recently.

Display

The display is getting an upgrade. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 sports the largest cover screen which is 3.4 inches in size. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 had a 1.9-inch cover display so this is surely a big upgrade. The main display remains the same (6.7 inches).

Let’s look at the display specs of Galaxy Z Flip 5 in detail-

Main Screen- The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a 6.7-inch FHD+ 2x Dynamic AMOLED display with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, Infinity Flex, and a resolution of 2640×1080 pixels. It has an aspect ratio of 22:9.

Cover Screen- The flip phone gets a large 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover display that comes with a 60Hz refresh rate, 306 PPI, and 720×748 pixel resolution.

The cover screen can do much more now. One can watch YouTube videos, use it as a camera viewfinder, and operate some third-party apps like Spotify from it. There are loads of customization options available for the cover screen.

Design

Moreover, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a different hinge design that has reduced the visibility of the seam. Although the smartphone maintains the same form factor the design has gone through some refinements as the flip smartphone now has flat sides and curvy edges. It doesn’t leave any gaps when folded, which is different from its predecessor. The dimensions have also been tweaked a little as Galaxy Z Flip 5 is thinner than Galaxy Z Flip 4 when folded.

Talking about precise specs, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is 71.9×85.1×15.1mm when folded and 71.9×165.1×6.9mm when unfolded. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 was 84.9×71.9×17.1mm when folded and 165.2×71.9×6.9mm when unfolded. The weight remains constant at 187 grams.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a dual camera setup at the back. It includes a 12MP ultrawide camera with F2.2 and a 123-degree FOV. There is a 12MP wide-angle camera with dual pixel AF, Optical Image Stabilization, F1.8, and an 83-degree Field of View. As for the selfie camera, there is a 10MP lens at the front with a 123-degree FOV.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 featured a 12MP wide-angle camera and a 12MP ultrawide-angle camera at the back. It had a 10MP selfie lens at the front.

Though the camera specs have not undergone any change the Flip 5 comes with some software features for the camera like face tracking. There is also a bigger and wider viewfinder when clicking selfies using the rear camera.

Battery

The battery capacity of both devices, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 stands at 3700mAh. However, with the implementation of the more power-efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset in the Galaxy Z Flip 5, users can expect an improvement in battery life. The device is equipped with a Li-Po 3700mAh non-removable battery, offering efficient charging capabilities with 25W wired charging, enabling a 50% charge in just 30 minutes. Additionally, the device supports 15W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse wireless charging, providing users with versatile charging options to meet their needs.
