Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 To Get Blood Pressure Monitoring Feature in Q3, 2020

Back in the day, Samsung introduced a blood pressure sensor on the Galaxy S9 (review) but recently launched Samsung flagships no longer feature a BP sensor. While the reasons are unknown, Samsung has just announced that it will be bringing Blood Pressure Monitoring in its Galaxy Watch Active 2 later this year.

Samsung is currently testing a new Samsung Health Monitor app which has been already approved by Ministery of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) as well as a software as a Medical Device (SaMD) agency in South Korea.

Before the Galaxy Watch Active 2 users use this new feature, they would have to download the Samsung Health Monitor app and calibrate it with a traditional BP cuff.

As per Samsung, the Smartwatch Blood Pressure readings will be based on Pulse wave analysis. The relationship between the calibration value and blood pressure change is being used to calculate blood pressure.

“The Samsung Health Monitor app has the potential to help millions of people around the world who are affected by high blood pressure,” said Taejong Jay Yang, Corporate SVP and Head of Health Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “This is one of many examples of how Samsung is integrating its best-in-class hardware with the latest software innovations to innovate mobile experiences.”

How BP Monitor will work on the Galaxy Watch Active 2?

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 users will first have to calibrate there smartwatch with a traditional cuff. Following a short calibration process, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 will able to measure blood pressure.

  1. Open Samsung Health Monitor App

    Once Samsung releases this app, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 users will be required to download this app on their phone.

  2. Wear the Galaxy Watch 2 correctly

    Ensure that the watch is snug on your non-dominant wrist. Use a traditional Blood Pressure monitor cuff on opposite your watch arm to measure current BP. Tap Next on the app and follow the instruction on the app.

  3. Start Calibration process

    Once you get results from a traditional BP monitor, the Samsung Health Monitor App will ask users to feed Blood Pressure monitor findings in the app for calibration purposes and hit submit.

  4. Calibrate again

    To ensure the Galaxy Watch Active 2 BP readings are closer to a traditional Blood Pressure monitor, Samsung Health Monitor App will ask you to repeat step 3 twice to before it prompts you will Calibration finished.

  5. Your Galaxy Watch Active 2 can measure Blood Pressure.

    As soon as you are done with the calibration process, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is good to measure provide Blood Pressure readings.
