Display, Design, and Build

The front display of the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 houses a small notch while the Galaxy M20 sports an Infinity-V display. Infinity-V is a fresh look compared to the other phones in the Samsung Portfolio. Smaller the notch, there would be more space for icons in the status bar. The Galaxy M20’s 6.3-inch display with 1080 x 2340 pixels projects more accurate colors than the 6.26-inch display of Zenfone Max Pro M2 with 1080 x 2280 resolution. The brightness levels are identical on both the phones.

As for the back of the phones, both of them sports glass-finish panel but our pick would go to Zenfone’s reflective panel which looks more elegant than the M20’s. We also prefer the better accessible placement of Zenfone’s rounded fingerprint scanner as compared to the oval-shaped reader in Samsung’s M20.

Zenfone offers better protection of Corning Gorilla Glass 6 against the Dragon Trail protection on the M20’s display.

Performance and Software

Samsung has its newest processor powering M20 under the hood. It’s a 1.8Ghz Octa-core Exynos 7904 chipset. On the other hand, Zenfone Max Pro M2 with its 2.2 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Processor is the clear winner in terms of processing power.

As for the memory options, Galaxy M20 comes in 3GB RAM+ 32GB storage as well as a higher 4GB RAM+ 64GB onboard storage. You could expand the storage via the dedicated MicroSD slot. Meanwhile, Zenfone Max Pro M2 is available in 3GB RAM plus 32GB storage, 4GB RAM plus 64GB and finally a 6GB RAM plus 64GB variant as well. Additionally, it could be expanded up to a whopping 2TB with an external memory card using a dedicated card slot.

In our final test of Androbench wherein we measured the storage performance, neither of them had a clear win. Samsung Galaxy M20 fared well in case of Sequential Read, while Zenfone scored better in Sequential Write speed as well as both Random Read and Write speeds.

Both the phones come with Widevine L1 Certification for HD streaming, but the Galaxy M20 is the one for which HD streaming actually works (on Prime Videos, at least). Samsung also features Dolby Atmos support for the enhanced audio experience.

On the software front, the phones are poles apart as the Zenfone features the minimal and pure stock Android experience. Samsung, on the other hand, clads the Android Oreo with Experience UI. You would love it if you prefer the software packed with features and applications out of the box.

Samsung has scheduled Pie for M20 in the month of August. Asus has confirmed Pie update for Zenfone Max Pro M2. However, the update schedule is not yet confirmed. Zenfone with its stock-ish Android would be more stable and quicker to receive the monthly security updates.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy M20 and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 ties with a 5000mAh battery. The battery backup is awesome for both phones, and you really don’t have to decide between the two in terms of mileage.

The Galaxy M20, however, offers faster charging via a USB-C port.

The 13MP front camera sensor in Zenfone Max Pro M2 is at least larger on paper as compared to the 8MP front shooter on Samsung Galaxy M20.

By judging their real-world performance and the pics we took, the rear camera performance is better on Samsung Galaxy M20. The front and rear shooters on the Samsung Galaxy M20 is capable of producing some vivid and natural shots. The Samsung also outperformed the Zenfone Max Pro M2 in unfavorable lighting of the indoors.

Besides leveraging Samsung’s brand value, the Galaxy M20 benefits from a trendier display, fast charging, USB Type-C port, and better camera performance.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2, on the other hand, should be the obvious choice for gamers and heavy users on a budget. It also has a fancier back panel. Both phones offer similar battery mileage and offer capable software.
