TL;DR

  • A few Z Fold 6 users have reported paint-peeling issues on the smartphone.
  • Samsung acknowledged the issue by saying that using “an incompatible third-party product” with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 can result in inadvertent damage.
  • Holding the phone while charging seems to be one of the key reasons.

In July 2024, the Korean tech giant and one of the largest smartphone manufacturing companies in the world, Samsung, released its flagship foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold 6 (review) and Galaxy Z Flip 6 (review). While the flip-style foldable isn’t facing any issues per se, a small number of Z Fold 6 users have reported paint-peeling issues on the smartphone. Apparently, the paint is chipping off the edges of the device, exposing the underlying layer of metal, which appears to be white in color.

Samsung Attributes The Paint Peeling Issue To Third-Party Devices

Most recently, Samsung acknowledged the issue by saying that using “an incompatible third-party product” with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 can result in inadvertent damage, such as “paint peeling.” The issue is related to the leakage of current that could affect the anodization, the process that gives the phone’s surface an appealing look and finish, which is corrosion-resistant by nature.

Third-Party Chargers And EMS Devices Lead To Current Leakage

  • The leakage of current from high-speed third-party chargers (when you’re holding the phone) that aren’t adequately grounded can delaminate or remove the paint from the surface. To solve the issues, Samsung recommends users use official chargers.
  • Similarly, powering an Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) with the foldable device while holding it could cause the paint to peel by affecting the anodization. For this, the company recommends users place the Galaxy device away from them so that it doesn’t touch any part of the body.

Toward the end, Samsung mentions that using a third-party charger from a reputable company, a high-quality device that supports the Qi standard, “should not be a problem.” However, the counterfeit chargers on the market don’t meet several safety requirements. Hence, they can result in current leakage and, ultimately, damage the upper layer of paint.

Using Products From Reputable Brands Shouldn’t Be An Issue

As noted by 9To5Google, the Qi standard refers to a wireless charging standard that has nothing to do with wired charging or holding the smartphone as it charges. It is also worth noting that the foldable has a new matte finish, and it could be one of the thousands of permutations and combinations with certain types of chargers that aren’t suiting the material.

Nonetheless, this is the extent of the information mentioned on the support page. Those facing severe paint peeling issues can contact a Samsung Service Center, but whether the company will offer a repair service or replace their devices (highlight unlikely) is not known at the moment.
