Gone are the days when people enquire only about the mileage of the car; nowadays, a majority of Indians give precedent to safety features, especially while buying a car between 10 lakhs to 20 lakhs or beyond this budget.

Following the trend, automobile makers like Tata and Mahindra are offering a rich portfolio of world-class vehicles complying with Global NCAP parameters. Despite coming at under 20 lakh prices, these cars successfully pass the crash test conducted by Global NCAP. We have here gathered a list of the top five safest cars under Rs 20 lakh retailing in India based on Global NCAP’s latest adult safety ratings.

1. Tata Punch

Tata Punch tops the list scoring a total of 57.34 points out of 66. The subcompact SUV offers a 5-star rating for adult safety and a 4-star child safety rating. Talking about the features, Tata Punch comes with a 5-seater option with a bold exterior design. The car offers a 1.2L Revotron petrol engine with both manual and automatic transmission. It provides a claimed range of 18.97kmpl for manual and 18.82kmpl for the automatic model. It retails at 5.82 lakh onwards (ex-showroom).

2. Mahindra XUV300

Mahindra XUV300 takes the second spot on the list scoring a 5-star rating with 16.42/17 points for adult safety and 4-star 37.44/49 points for child safety. This totally sums to 53.86 points out of 66 on the Global NCAP standards. The highlighting feature of XUV300 includes an electric sunroof, segment-first front parking sensors, and a long wheelbase. It comes in both petrol and diesel variants. The price starts at Rs 8.41 lakh and goes up to Rs 14.07 lakh for the top model.

3. Tata Altroz

Tata Altroz is regarded as the safest hatchback car in India scoring 45.13 points out of 66 on the Global NCAP parameters. It gets 16.06/17 points for adult safety with a 5-star rating and 29/49 points for child safety with a 3-star rating. It comes equipped with ALFA Architecture and a comprehensive safety system meeting the Global NCAP standards. The Altroz is selling across India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 6.19 lakh – Rs 10.14 lakh.

4. Tata Nexon

Tata Nexon is the third vehicle from the brand to make into the list of the top five safest cars in India. It scores 16.06/17 points for adult safety (5-star) and 25/49 points for child safety (3-star). Nexon has a compact SUV design integrated with a sports coupe style. It offers ventilated leatherette seats on the front. The company offers a wide range of variants ranging from petrol and diesel motors with manual and automation transmissions. It is priced at Rs 7.54 lakhs for the base model going up to Rs 13.89 lakhs for the top Kaziranga edition.

5. Mahindra XUV700

As per adult safety ratings, Mahindra XUV700 gets a score of 16.03/17 securing a fifth place on the list. It scores 41.66/49 points for child safety rating. In terms of total, XUV700 scores the highest at 57.69 points outnumbering the Punch. The XUV700 is offered in two seating capacities – 5 seaters and 7 seaters. Mahindra offers the XUV700 with advanced features in the cockpit including AdrenoX technology, built-in Amazon Alexa, 3D sound technology, driver drowsiness detection, and several drive modes. The prices vary from Rs 13.18 lakh to Rs 24.58 lakh.
