Question: How is the Xiaomi Redmi 4 design?

Answer: Xiaomi wasn’t wrong when it stated that design is the biggest upgrade for the Redmi 4 over the last year’s 3s and 3s Prime. The rounded corners and 2.5D glass make this sweet compact phone look elegant.

The bezel around the display is fairly narrow, all buttons and fingerprint reader (rear-mounted) are readily accessible, and the mono speaker has now been shifted to the bottom edge. The phone has a substantial heft to it but doesn’t feel bulky at all, which is impressive considering that it houses a massive 4100mAh battery.

Question: How is the build quality of the Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: The handset feels quite sturdy. The touch glass is responsive and there is an oleophobic coating on the display as well. We are yet to drop it, but for now, the Redmi 4 feels quite durable.

The metal back is a smudge magnet, however, considering that you will anyways plant it in a case, this shouldn’t be a major peeve point.

Question: Are the capacitive keys on Xiaomi Redmi 4 backlit?

Answer:  No. They’re not.

Question: How is the display of Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer:  The 5-inch HD display on the phone feels crisp enough for the price. If you have lived with sharper displays, you are likely to notice resolved pixels every now and then, but the resolution is in no way a deal breaker.

The colors are warm and vibrant. That is to say, you won’t have to endure eye-raping blue tint that we generally see on cheap displays.

You can toggle with color temperature under display settings, but that won’t do you much good.

Question: How is the outdoor visibility? Does the Xiaomi Redmi 4 has the option for automatic brightness?

Answer: Yes, auto brightness is present and works fine. The outdoor visibility isn’t steller, but is still workable.

Question: Does the Xiaomi Redmi 4 display has Gorilla glass protection?

Answer: Yes. The version of Gorilla Glass hasn’t been specified, though.

Performance and Storage

Question: How much internal storage space is free on Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: Out of 16GB, about 10.5 GB is available for users.

Question: How much RAM is free on Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: Out of 2GB, around 450MB is usually free on the device (with basic to moderate usage). The phone seems to kill apps rather aggressively.

Question: Does Xiaomi Redmi 4 support microSD card?

Answer: Yes, the second SIM card slot can accept up to 128GB microSD storage. No, apps can’t be moved to external storage. Since the slot is hybrid, you can either have two SIM cards or one SIM and one MicroSD card. And with only 10GB or so free on board, you will end up siding with the latter.

Question: Does Xiaomi Redmi 4 support USB OTG?

Answer: Yes, USB OTG is supported.

Question: Does Xiaomi Redmi 4 has a fingerprint sensor?

Answer: Yes. The fingerprint sensor is present on the rear. It’s very fast and responsive.

Question: How is the day-to-day or general performance? How is gaming performance of Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: In our testing period, Xiaomi Redmi 4 didn’t hang very often, but it’s a bit slow. Since there are limited RAM and storage on the low-end model, we expect the performance to degrade further in the long run.

The games we played, even heavy ones, were playable, but this certainly isn’t a gaming phone. Performance-wise, we can recommend the base Redmi 4 variant only to basic users.

Redmi 4 Benchmark Scores

  • AnTuTu: 42830
  • Geekbench Single core: 654
  • Geekbench Multi-core: 1937
  • Quadrant Standard: 13148

Question: Does Xiaomi Redmi 4 has heating issues?

Answer: It gets hot easily when used outdoors and while charging. The temperature remains under control otherwise.

Question: Does Xiaomi Redmi 4 support Google cardboard and other VR Apps?

Answer: Yes, it does.

Camera

Question: How is the Xiaomi Redmi 4 camera quality?

Answer: The 13MP rear camera has f/2.0 aperture lens which is, again, quite unconventional in this budget. The images captured in outdoor lighting look good, at least on the phone’s display. Yes, the image quality is far from perfect.

Yes, the image quality is far from perfect. Some shots have a yellow tint, many a time the aggressive software eats up image details and texture, and even the dynamic range could have been better. But at the same time, there is no reason to complain at this price point. The camera quality exceeds our expectation and the camera is also one of the best you can get in this budget.

Performance of Both the selfie camera and the primary rear camera stumbles in low light.

Question: How well does the HDR Mode and Pro Mode work on the Xiaomi Redmi 4 camera?

Answer: To toggle for HDR mode is present at the perfect spot in the camera app(Top left corner). The HDR mode works well, but is inconsistent. We did observe some metering issues in bright sunlight. The Pro mode too is very limited.

Question: Can the Xiaomi Redmi 4 shoot 4K videos?

Answer: No, it can’t.

Question: Can you record slow-motion videos on Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: No. It can not. You get an option to shoot time-lapse videos, though.

Software

Question: How is the software on the Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: The MIUI 8 on Redmi 4 is based on Android Marshmallow, but a stable Nougat upgrade should arrive in the next few months.

Xiaomi isn’t skimming features for the base variant. Double storage, gestures, scrolling screenshots and other highlighted MIUI 8 features are all present and run fine. The interface, however, is a heavy one and this is particularly noticeable when you open or switch between apps.

There are numerous customization options available.

Question: Does the Xiaomi Redmi 4 support Gestures?

Answer: Yes, it does.

Question: Does the Xiaomi Redmi 4 support double tap to wake feature?

Answer- No.

Question: Will Xiaomi Redmi 4 get Android Nougat or Android O update?

Answer: Yes, Xiaomi is working on it. You can switch to preview build right away, but we would strongly advise you against it.

Miscellaneous

Question: What kind of SIM cards does Xiaomi Redmi 4 support?

Answer: The handset has one Micro SIM and one nano SIM slot. Since the storage is very limited on the base variant, you will most probably have to forfeit dual SIM privilege for additional MicroSD storage.

Question: Does Redmi 4 have an IR Remote?

Answer: Yes, IR blaster is present on the top edge.

Question: What comes inside the Redmi 4 box?

Answer: Inside the box, you will find a 2A -5V charger, a USB Type-A Cable, SIM ejector, and paperwork.

Question: How is the call quality on Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: Call quality is very good in our area.

Question: Does Xiaomi Redmi 4 support Reliance Jio SIM cards/ 4G VoLTE?

Answer: Yes. 4G VoLTE works fine.

Question: How is the Battery backup on Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: The 4100mAh battery can easily last for one and half day of moderate usage. Battery backup is best in class and counts as one of its major strengths. Charging, however, is painfully slow.

Question: Does Xiaomi Redmi 4 support fast charging?

Answer: No.

Question: What are the sensors present on Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: All major sensors are included.

Question: How loud is the loudspeaker on Xiaomi Redmi 4?

Answer: Loudspeaker is fairly loud. Audio quality is average.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Redmi 4 looks good and exceeds our expectations on most fronts. It’s performance, however, is a limiting factor. The 2GB RAM variant that we tested won’t cut it even for moderate users, as the way most of us use our phones these days, 16GB can get exhausted in no time.

Redmi 4A buyers can stretch their budget and buy Redmi 4 2GB RAM variant simply because it looks and feels a lot better. Those aiming for the top end 4GB RAM variant (if there are any) should rather buy the Redmi Note 4, unless a compact phone ranks top on their priority list. And the 3GB RAM variant is, what we feel, the most appropriate one.

The Redmi 4 2GB RAM variant is probably the one you could buy for basic users such as your parents.

Pros

  • Great design, Solid built
  • Good battery backup
  • Reasonable camera
  • Reasonable display quality

Cons

  • No fast charging
  • Poor performance
  • Hybrid SIM slot (even more of a problem on the base 16GB storage variant)
