Qualcomm and Google plans 4 years of updates for future Android phones

Good news for Android users as going forward their new phones are likely to get four years of updates. To be precise, Android handsets running on new Snapdragon silicons will be eligible for three years of major OS updates (besides the launch version) and four years of security updates.

“The plan is to roll this out to all Snapdragon chipsets, including lower-tier ones, but starting the new Snapdragon 888 platform,” revealed a Qualcomm PR to Ars Technica.

So, the privilege isn’t any more limited to select Pixels and Galaxy devices. If everything works out well, then even entry-grade phones will be getting the latest software smarts and security.

But, there’s of course the underlying caveat, which is that the smartphone brands need to rollout the skinned builds to each of their devices.

“Google continues to work closely with our technology partners to increase the freshness of the Android ecosystem. Through this collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, we expect that Android users will have the latest OS upgrades and greater security on their devices,” said David Burke, vice president of Android engineering, Google.

“We are excited to work with Google to extend our support for Android OS and security updates on future Snapdragon mobile platforms utilizing the Project Treble enhancements. Through this collaboration, we expect accelerated Android OS upgrade on Snapdragon-based devices while providing a superior user experience for end-users.”
