In an ideal world, you shouldn’t have to use a screen protector on your phone’s display and should be able to enjoy the smooth touch in its full glory. That’s unfortunately not an option as if you dare to live without protection, you will end up with painful, irreversible scratches in no time.
Hopefully, diamond glass on Smartphones will fix that sooner than you might think!
Akhan semiconductors is already working on mass production of its “Mirage Diamond Glass” and is already in talks with major smartphone players, one of whom will get to use its Diamond Glass on their phones by the end of 2017.
Adam Khan, CEO of Akhan Semiconductor, further claims that the diamond glass will be cleaner, stronger, and harder than anything that you have used before (which includes Corning Gorilla and Saphire Glasses).
Akhan Semiconductors will be able to produce between 10 million to 30 million of these for Smartphones and just about 1 million for wearables. Which implies you can’t expect them to ship on the regular iPhone or Galaxy flagship.

It must be noted that these aren’t mined diamonds that we are talking about. What Akhan Semiconductors is using are man made diamonds that are made of methane and can conduct electricity. Methane’s abundance helps with keeping costs down.
The entire touch glass won’t be made of diamond. The Mirage Diamond Glass involves depositing artificial diamond on Gorilla Glass or perhaps unstrengthened glass to make them 6 times stronger and 10 times harder. The diamond crystal on top will also resist grime and water. It will also make resist heat 800x better which should make your phone ideal to use in VR and AR headsets.
Comparing to Saphire Glass, Nano-crystalline diamond is less brittle than sapphire crystal, Khan said, because it can be flexed to greater degrees. And since it can be grown in very thin layers on a large area, it may also be cheaper to produce.
Of course the new glass technology will be more expensive than an ion strengthened glass, but Khan claims that it will still be competitive when compared to Motorola’s shatter shield displays used in phones like Moto Z Force.
