The recently introduced OPPO K3 is quite a fascinating phone, designed for tech-savvy people who prefer buying online. The handset is not only about towering specs or about a competitive price, but about passing on a complete, uncompromised experience in its respective segment.

In India, the OPPO K3 will primarily compete against Galaxy M40 that’s also meant to cater to the online audience and relays a more aggressive side of Samsung.

Which one of the two is a better option for your specific needs?

To answer that question, let’s stack these two phones against each other and judge them on various aspects that matter in the detailed comparison that follows.

Design and Display

The OPPO K3 has the clear advantage of integrating the latest design trends, which make it a lot more appealing. The first thing you’ll notice is the gorgeous uninterrupted Super AMOLED screen laid out across the entire fascia.

This was possible because the selfies are handled by a transparent raising camera that’s symmetrically aligned at the top center. This elevating module has a rounded curve design and a sapphire lens and is tested to hold good for 200,000 pops! In comparison, the punch-hole on the Galaxy M40 is perhaps more progressive than a U or V-shaped notch, yet feels way behind the continuous, seamless screen you’d get on the OPPO K3.

That’s also because the OPPO K3 employs a significantly better quality 6.5-inch Super AMOLED screen as against the same resolution 6.3-inch TFT panel on the Galaxy M40. AMOLED screens are characterized by deep contrasts and punchy colors, which is why watching multimedia content on the K3 is an awesome experience.

Moving on to the rear, you will find that the OPPO K3 has the camera system positioned completely under and shielded by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The back gently curves towards the edges for a comfortable grip and all elements and branding are symmetrically placed along the center. The exquisite gradient options further add to the slick look. The Galaxy M40, on the other hand, has a gradient glass finish, but the back is actually made of polycarbonate and doesn’t quite feel as premium.

Overall, both of these phones are handy and comfortable to operate, but the OPPO K3 looks and feels so much better and sturdier, and has a much better display.

Fingerprint and Face Unlock

Since the K3 has a Super AMOLED panel, it was possible for OPPO to use an in-display fingerprint sensor. Compared to the last generation sensor on OPPO K1, the one on the K3 is 28% faster and is also 10% more consistent.

The front-mounted sensor on the OPPO K3 is easier to access, especially when compared to the rear-mounted capacitive sensor on the Galaxy M40 that’s situated a little too close to the top. The rear-mounted capacitive sensors aren’t as trendy as the in-display scanners.

Both phones also offer fast face unlock as secondary biometric unlock option.

Performance and Software

Let’s now talk about the performance. The Galaxy M40 and OPPO K3 are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 and Snapdragon 710 octa-core chipsets, respectively.

The two chipsets are quite close in terms of day-to-day usage performance, but the higher tier Snapdragon 710 has a more powerful Adreno 616 GPU and the impact is noticeable while gaming. Unlike the Galaxy M40, the OPPO K3 also employs high-quality UFS 2.1 storage along with LPDDR4X RAM.

In India, the Galaxy M40 is available in 6GB RAM and 128GB storage option, and the OPPO K3 retails in two variants – 6GB RAM + 64GB storage, and 8GB RAM + 128GB storage.

As stated above, the day-to-day usage performance is similar on both phones, but the OPPO K3 takes a noticeable lead with gaming. The experience is further embellished by enhancements like Game Boost 2.0, Separate and rich Dolby Atmos audio.

The Galaxy M40 is also missing the 3.5mm audio jack, which in our opinion takes away from the gaming experience. If you run out of battery while gaming on the Galaxy M40, you will need to make a tough choice between connecting a charger or connecting headphones via the USB port which is not the case with OPPO K3.

Both phones run Android Pie-based software. The Color OS 6.0 on OPPO K3 and One UI on Samsung Galaxy M40 are both thoughtfully designed and optimized interfaces. The Color OS is a bit more rich in terms of customization options and features, though.

Camera and Battery

Both the Galaxy M40 and OPPO K3 have 16MP selfie cameras on the front with f/2.0 aperture. On the rear, the OPPO K3 has a 16MP primary camera paired with a depth sensor. The Galaxy M40, on the other hand, has a 32MP primary camera paired with a wide-angle camera and a depth sensor.

In practice, the camera performance is often more than the sum of megapixels. The OPPO K3 leverages advanced AI software with features like Multi-frame Noise Reduction and Dazzle color mode 2.0.

Both the Galaxy M40 and OPPO K3 can take amazing shots in proper daylight, but indoors and in tricky lighting, the OPPO K3 benefits from smarter software and outputs better results more consistently. Both phones have Night Modes that you can use for capturing dark scenes, and the one on the OPPO K3 is defter at salvaging details.

The Galaxy M40 has an additional wide-angle shooter, but the quality of wide-angle shots isn’t much to write home about.

Similarly, the Selfie camera on the K3 has the advantage of a subtle and intelligent AI beautification software that OPPO has consistently improved and perfected over the years.

As for the battery mileage, the OPPO K3 is again a clear winner. The handset houses a bigger 3765mAh battery as compared to the 3500mAh power unit on the Galaxy M40. The K3 also supports faster 20W VOOC 3.0 charging as against the 15W fast charging tech on Galaxy M40. Both phones have reversible USB Type-C charging ports.

Bigger battery, faster-charging speeds, and more optimized software ensure a remarkably dependable battery mileage on the OPPO K3 as against the Galaxy M40.

Verdict

Both the Galaxy M40 and the OPPO K3 are competent options, but as we saw through the comparison, the K3 clearly outshines the Samsung’s offering in all key areas and emerges as a clear winner here. No two ways about it.

The OPPO K3 has a gorgeous true full-view Super AMOLED display, a trendier design, offers much better gaming experience, retains the audio jack, delivers better camera performance and has a significantly longer-lasting battery. The end result is a much more premium and fulfilling experience.
