Design and Build

The pop-up cameras are an eye-catching sight on both phones, and what primarily differentiates the two from one another.

At the same time,  the motorized slider mechanism is also their peeve point. It prompts the question of durability in user’s mind. On the Nex S, only the selfie camera pops up from the top edge. On the Find X a bigger slider, that houses all cameras, pops up from the middle.

We are yet to see drop test results of both phones but considering Find X has an entire top-edge moving, and it could be more susceptible to damage than Nex S. Plus, it will be difficult to find a compatible case cover for the Oppo Find X.

Other than that, both Nex S and Find X are dolled in a glass-metal unibody design with curved edges, sleek rear panel, and full vision displays up front. The Find X has no fingerprint sensor, whereas the Vivo Nex S has an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The Vivo Nex S is even slimmer than the Find X, 8mm to be exact, making it comparatively comfortable to wield. The Nex S sports power button and Volume rocker on the left edge, speaker grill and charging port at the bottom edge, and audio jack at the top.

Contrary to this, the Find X has the power button and volume rockers on either side edges, and speaker grill and charging port at the bottom edge. There is no 3.5mm audio jack on the phone, but it is slightly lighter than Vivo Nex S, 186g against 199 grams.

Display

The display is the talking point on both phones. The Vivo Nex S sports 6.59-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 19.3:9 aspect ratio and screen-to-body ratio as high as 91.24%. The Find X, on the other hand, takes the numbers to the next level with 19.5:9 aspect ratio 6.42-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display.

The Oppo phone has a 93.8% screen-to-body ratio, and the display has attractive curved side edges, just like the kind you see on high-end Samsung Galaxy S-series phones.

When it comes to the display, the Find X Wins.

In-display Fingerprint Sensor vs Face Unlock

Both phones have a different approach to biometrics authentication as well. While Find X relies on just 3D face unlock, the Nex S features the cool in-display fingerprint technology. Unfortunately, you can’t get both on either phone, and neither of them is as fast as capacitive sensors.

Out of the two solutions, we’d rather have Vivo’s in-display fingerprint sensor. It’s the same one that we experienced in Vivo X21, and it works just fine.

Processor and Software

The comparison might end up in a tie here as we have Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC powering both Vivo Nex S and Oppo Find X, paired with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB storage space.

The SD 845 is currently the most powerful chipset and will ensure you won’t run into any hiccups, stutters, or app-freezes.

As for the software, both phones run Android 8.1 Oreo, heavily customized with their maker’s custom UI. The Nex S has Vivo’s Funtouch OS and Find X Oppo’s Color OS. The custom skins are reminiscent of iOS and are quite feature rich.

Camera and Battery

The Vivo Nex S sports dual-rear cameras where the primary camera is a 12MP sensor and second one, a 5MP snapper. The cameras are backed by f/1.9 and f/2.4 aperture lenses, OIS and LED flash to capture details even in low light. For selfies, the phone features a retractable selfie camera that sports an 8MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture lens.

In the similar context, the Oppo Find X has both its rear camera and front camera on the retractable tray. It features a 16MP+20MP sensors with f/2.0 and f/2.4 aperture lenses, OIS, and LED flash on the rear, and 25MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture lens on the front.

The selfie cameras on both phones are backed by AI that intelligently analyses features such as face, nose, and eyes, etc., and include iPhone-like portrait lighting effects. The Find X can additionally create Omojis, which are animated emoji similar to iPhone X Animoji.

The hardware specs give Oppo Find X an edge here, but we have to test the cameras in our space to call upon a clear winner here.

However, on the battery front, the Vivo Nex S beats the Oppo Find X by a margin. The former’s 4000mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging is beefier than 3,740mAh battery with VOOC fast charging support on Find X.

Verdict

On paper, the Vivo Nex S and Oppo Find X have managed to do well with their respective specifications. They flaunt cool design and powerful innards, but their immersive full-screen displays come at a price. There is no assurance from water and dust-resistant, the pop-up cameras feel sluggish, and durability holds big question mark.

The Vivo Nex S is significantly cheaper than the Find X, and that should be its biggest advantage.

What works for Oppo Find X:

  • Better camera hardware
  • 3D Face unlock
  • Curved-edge Display
  • Looks More Elegant

What works for Vivo Nex S:

  • In-display Fingerprint sensor
  • Less susceptible to damages
  • Is significantly cheaper
