OPPO A-series phones aim to offer the latest trends and high-performance hardware to consumers looking to buy affordable phones. The just-launched OPPO A5s abides by the same philosophy and will primarily compete against Vivo’s Y91 and Samsung’s Galaxy J6 that are other popular offline options that fall in the same price bracket.

So, which one should buy? Is the new OPPO A5s better than Galaxy J6 or the Vivo Y91? Let’s compare the three phones in detail to know the answer.

Design and Display

The OPPO A5s and Vivo Y91, both offer 6.2-inch waterdrop screen. The Samsung Galaxy J6 has a relatively smaller 5.6-inch screen and comparatively beefier bezels above and below it.  All of the three phones offer HD+ resolution resulting in sharp texts and images.

The OPPO A5s offers an elegant glass-finish with a gold chrome strip running around the camera module adding a pleasant contrast. The fingerprint sensor is placed right where your index finger naturally lies and it’s oval shape ensures more scanning area.

The Vivo Y91 has a gradient pattern at the back and feels equally ergonomic. The glossy plastic finish, however, robs it of a truly premium feel. The Samsung Galaxy J6 is handy and compact, but the fingerprint sensor at back is too close to the camera sensor and offers very little scanning area.

Performance and Software

When it comes to performance, the OPPO A5s has a clear cut advantage. This is the first phone to bring in Helio P35 octa-core chipset to the affordable price segment. The chipset clearly outweighs the Helio P22 on the Vivo Y91 and the Exynos 7870 on the Galaxy J6.

The OPPO A5s and Y91 offer 2GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The Galaxy J6 offers 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. Also, all the three phones include a separate card slot for freely adding secondary microSD storage.

The fingerprint sensor is remarkably fast on OPPO A5s, and so is the face unlock. The Vivo Y91 comes in a close second. Biometrics on Galaxy J6 are comparatively slower.

As for the software, the OPPO A5s, Galaxy J6, and Vivo Y91 run Android 8.1 Oreo-based custom interfaces. The ColorOS 5.2.1 on the A5s has a plethora of customization options, which is to say that you will be able to tune it to your preferences. The Vivo Y91’s Funtouch OS and Galaxy J6’s experience UI offer numerous customization options too. Which interface you prefer more would depend on your individual taste and preferences.

Camera and Battery

The OPPO A5s and Vivo Y91 both have dual rear cameras, while the Samsung Galaxy J6 manages with a single camera. The additional sensor on OPPO A5s and Vivo Y91 allows them to shoot better portrait shots with blurred background.

As for camera quality, the OPPO A5s again takes a lead as the software is smart enough to salvage shots clicked in low or tricky lighting. MediaTek’s Helio P35 chipset on the A5s also brings enhancements to improve dual camera performance, and that shows in the portrait shots.

The Vivo Y91 also has the same 13MP+ 2MP configuration and can shoot decent shots in outdoor light. Low light performance, however, can’t match up to the A5s. The Galaxy J6 again captures great details in proper outdoor lighting but is an average performer indoors.

All of the above include 8MP selfie camera, and once again the A5s has a slight edge owing to its smarter AI beautify mode.

The OPPO A5s has the biggest battery of the three (4230mAh ) and the Vivo V91 comes in second with a 4030 mAh power unit. The Galaxy J6, on the other hand, manages to accommodate only 3000mAh capacity that places it in an unfavorable position.

Verdict

A year ago, we couldn’t have imagined that the affordable phone experience for the offline market would evolve at such a rapid pace. The OPPO A5s, Vivo Y91, and Samsung Galaxy J6 are all very impressive phones that offer competent features.

At the same time, the OPPO A5s is the latest offering of the three and thus brings in fresh optimizations that lend it a clear lead. It has the fastest chipset, the biggest battery and the best photography experience of the three.
