A new study conducted by Opera claims that its Max browser can save up to 60 percent of mobile data on ‘entertainment apps’. The app compresses audio and video streams to save your precious data, and the whole thing does work.

“An Android smartphone without data is like a car without gas, it can’t take you the places you want to go,” says Sergey Lossev, Product Head for Opera Max at Opera. “Unfortunately, data is still expensive for hundreds of millions of users, and entertainment apps drain mobile data much faster than any other app. When you make a data-savings engine capable of compressing videos and music and then make it work seamlessly with native Android apps, you get a powerful tool for lowering the cost of data usage and helping users maximize their entertainment options.”

According to the in-house study Opera Max users can save up to 60 percent on YouTube and Netflix, 40 percent on audio streaming services like Saavn and Gaana and up to 15 percent on Hotstar and Eros Now.

Personally, we would never recommend anyone to use these services on anything but a WiFi connection, but if you absolutely must, data compression is something you could definitely use.

Not only Opera, but many industrial big guns are trying to provide alternatives to save data, especially in developing markets like India, where a smartphone can possibly be more expensive than 1GB 3G data pack. Even Google recently revamped its data saver mode and will include granular control over App data usage in upcoming Android N.
