OnePlus And Meizu Caught Rigging Benchmark Apps

0

If you have been following tech updates for a while, you must remember the furore from a few years back where all major OEM’s including HTC, Samsung, and Huawei were caught red handed cheating on Benchmark scores by tweaking clock frequency and other chipset attributes while running specific apps. Well, a recent investigation by XDA developers reveals that OnePlus and Meizu are doing just the same on their flagship handsets.

When tested with a special build of Geekbench made by Primate Labs, the OnePlus 3T and Meizu Pro 6 Plus were found to be significantly slower and hotter than when tested with the previous App versions. Both devices switched to a faster performance mode where Cores in both CPU clusters were clocked at high frequencies irrespective of the CPU load to deceive benchmark standards.

OnePlus has admitted to the misconduct but claims that this was done to improve gaming performance (which doesn’t make sense). A future update of Oxygen OS will address the issue and the 3T won’t artificially accelerate while running benchmark apps.

While rigging Benchmarks is surely immoral, it is certainly less damaging than the last time it happened. Many more people these days are looking beyond specs and buying decisions aren’t significantly influenced by these scores anymore. Even when true, these scores can only tell you so much about the real world smartphone experience.

OnePlus official statement:

In order to give users a better user experience in resource intensive apps and games, especially graphically intensive ones, we implemented certain mechanisms in the community and Nougat builds to trigger the processor to run more aggressively. The trigger process for benchmarking apps will not be present in upcoming OxygenOS builds on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.
