OnePlus announced a 120Hz 2K+ OLED display at its 2020 Screen Technology Meeting held in China. Hours prior to the event, OnePlus CEO shared the progress in R&D on the 120Hz screen. He extolled it as the company’s “new breakthroughs after adding 90Hz fluid screen to lead the industry”.

This comes in the wake of CES 2020, wherein Pete Lau had affirmed their next major phones viz. OnePlus 8 series will support a 120Hz refresh rate. He even touted it to be “the best smartphone display in 2020.”

OnePlus 8 120Hz Display Key Takeaways

Technically, the display is manufactured by Samsung. However, OnePlus claims it has partnered with the South Korean giant to iron out the animations including the navigational gestures.

Specs-wise, this will be a QHD+ OLED panel just like the OnePlus 7T Pro but with a higher 120Hz refresh rate. Now, at the event, the brand emphasized the use of custom MEMC (Motion Estimation/ Motion Compensation) technology to buttress the frame rate in videos to hit 120Hz. In other words, we would see interpolation in practice.

In the above image, you could see the location of the MEMC chip inside the phone. Now whether it results in “too lifelike and raw feed”, a caveat of motion interpolation is something to be seen. Nevertheless, an option to disable MEMC would be welcome.

OnePlus also brags the most accurate color accuracy and 4096-level of automatic brightness control on the device, with the peak lux hitting 1000 nits while playing HDR content. Rest, the display will reportedly support a 240Hz Touch Sampling Rate, 10-bit deep color gamut, and a Minimum Perceptible Color Difference (MPCD), or Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD) rating of <0.8.

Since the OnePlus 7 Pro (review) was in limelight for its 90Hz OLED panel, the brand seems to be betting heavy yet again on the display specs. Now, neither the panel’s from OnePlus labs nor the screaming 120Hz a new thing in the market. We have seen phones such as Asus ROG Phone 2 (review) with the same refresh rate before. Hence OnePlus needs to cook something more to lure the cash out of customers’ pockets.

OnePlus 8 series: What to Expect?

Source: @OnLeaks

This time around we might even see a lite trim variant, thus totaling up to 3 OnePlus 8s. That is OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro and a OnePlus 8 Lite.

The rumors and leaks about the upcoming phones have already started making rounds.

Here we have gathered all the details about the new OnePlus phones from across the web.

Although historically OnePlus holds its launch in the month of April-May. However, this time around, we might see a preponed announcement.

The Pro model is rumored to shave off a few inches in size. But down the line, we have learned that it might stick to 6.7-inches, while the standard and Lite models might measure somewhere around 6.5 inches or even 6.44.

As the top two trims are likely to jump to a 120Hz screen, the Lite variant might steward the 90Hz refresh rate.

Looking closer into the inner layout image shared above, the OnePlus 8 or presumably the  8 Pro will bear a pop-up module siloed atop. Swivel to the rear and the rumors suggest following configuration –

  • 60MP cameras, joined by a 16MP on each, then a 13MP on the Pro and 12MP
  • OnePlus 8 Lite looks set to have a 48MP ( f/1.7) main camera, then the same 16MP(f/2.2) and 12MP (f/2.4) combo as the OnePlus 8.
  • 32MP selfie snapper on the Pro and Standard edition; 16MP on the lite.
  • A time of flight unit

At the bedrock, Snapdragon 865 is expected on top two models, whilst the lite is speculated to ship with Mediatek Dimensity 1000. The memory options will probably remain the same as precursors. OnePlus might pack a bigger 4500mAh battery on the Pro edition and 4000mAh on the rest. To refill them, the box might contain a 50W iteration of SuperVOOC on the Pro, a 30W on the standard edition and lastly a 20W charger on the Lite. And since its 2020, 5G support will be highly likely.

If 2019 was the year OnePlus marked its way into the flagship territory, 2020 will be when fans and critics alike will expect it to up the ante. Ergo, the brand which is an epithet for ‘flagship-killer’ is expected to subsume top-brass specs. Still, we advise you to take the above details with a dash of salt.
