OnePlus fans weren’t happy when they discovered that their OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T couldn’t stream HD content on Netflix, Google Play, Amazon Prime, and other apps. The issue was the missing Widevine Level 1 certification that is required by major content services to stream HD content on mobile phones.

OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 5 had Widevine Level 3 certification instead that allows them to stream only SD content.

OnePlus responded quickly to the allegations and promised a fix for the baffling oversight. After a few weeks, OnePlus has an update program in place, but it isn’t anything as simple as you’d have hoped for.

How to get HD Streaming update on OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T?

Widevine Level 1 certificate needs to be installed on a phone using an authenticated PC over a physical connection. Or in other words, this simply can’t be accomplished with an Over-the-Air (OTA) update.

You will have to send your phone to the OnePlus and will get it back within 5 working days. OnePlus will pay the shipping cost in North America, Europe, India, and China. Everywhere else, users will have to pay for shipping as well.

It is a tedious process indeed, but since the alternative is to live without HD content, most consumers who subscribe to streaming services won’t have an option but to part with their devices.

OnePlus hasn’t clarified weather upcoming OnePlus 5T units will have the update pre-installed or not.

The issue also effects OnePlus 3 and 3T and considering the tedious update process and the fact that the two devices are nearing the end of their update cycle, we wouldn’t be holding our breath.
