Apart from all sorts of weird notches, we are surely going to see smartphone makers excessing on cameras next year. Freshly leaked Nokia 9 renders further affirm that HMD Global will release a ‘Penta-camera’ phone early next year.

The press image leaked by @evleaks reveal full Nokia 9 Design and clearly show the 5-camera arrangement on the Nokia 9, while also revealing an in-display fingerprint reader on its harmonious notch-free front.

What would Nokia 9’s 5 rear cameras be used for?

Well, we don’t know for sure, but its highly probable that these include a regular primary sensor, a sensor with a zoom lens, one with a wide-angle lens, a dedicated sensor for depth sensing. That still leaves one unaccounted for. Going by current trends, the bundle could also include a ToF sensor for 3D depth mapping.

Nokia, or rather HMD Global, isn’t the only one trying to counter smartphone photography constraints by using multiple sensors. Huawei has quite a few triple rear camera phones, Samsung already has a rear quad-camera phone, and light is reportedly working on a phone with 9 cameras.

Are more camera sensors on a smartphones effective?

In a world where the best camera phone still has just a single sensor, the use of multiple sensors is certainly questionable. The concept is surely promising but so far multiple camera sensors haven’t justified their existence in a meaningful way.

We will need to wait and watch to know if Nokia is able to weave some PureView magic with the 5 camera setup.
