Design and Build

Both Nokia 7 and Moto X4 use metal-sandwhiched-between-glass construction. That is to say, there is glass on both front and rear and a metal side rim running along the edges.

Talking about the design, Nokia 7 has got a revamped look from the previous line of Nokia devices. The new Nokia is more glossy and daunts an all-aluminum chassis with diamond-cut beveled corners. Apart from this, the phone is splash-proof with IP54 certification, has got fingerprint sensor on the rear panel and replaces the capacitive buttons with the on-screen buttons.

The Moto X4 is built on the same ideology as well. The phone has been framed with Glass on the rear, 2.5D glass on top, front-mounted fingerprint sensor, and curved smooth edges on the sides. Moto X4 will be IP64 certified, which means it will be water-resistant to a greater degree.

Display

Both Nokia and Moto play it bold by sticking to the conventional 16:9 screen aspect ratio. They both have a 5.2-inch full-HD IPS LCD (1080×1920 pixels) displays securely placed under the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Here, the scores are tied as the display on both Nokia 7 and Moto X4 have the same size, type, and resolution.

Performance and Software

At the software and performance front, both Nokia 7 and Moto X4 are at par with each other.

Reading the software first, both the smartphones will run on stock Android Nougat out of the box, with a promised upgrade to Android Oreo. Not much of a difference in the UI, but Moto X4 will be much more convenient to use, thanks to its loaded Moto gesture like shake the device to jump to the camera app and othe subtle enhancements.

Moving to the performance, both Nokia 7 and Moto X4 extracts raw power from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 processor and have 64GB and 32GB storage, respectively, which you can further expand up to 128GB.

However, the Moto X4 will come in 3GB variant, Nokia 7 will be available in 4GB and 6GB variants. We have to wait for the full review to rule a judgment here, but the extra RAM on Nokia 7 should definitely prove to be advantageous.

Camera and Battery

The Moto X4 features a dual-camera setup at the back. It has a 12MP autofocus pixel sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide angle lens with 120° fields of view. Up front, it has a 16MP sensor with selfie flash, f/2.0 aperture, and Beautification mode.

In the similar foray, the Nokia 7 hangs on with a single 16MP camera with premium Carl Zeiss optics, dual-tone flash, OZO 360-degree directional audio capture technology, 4k video support and the renowned “Bothie” feature. For selfies, it has a 5MP sensor with wide f/2.0 aperture lens and auto-focus (a huge plus point for selfies).

Moto X4 seems to hold an edge over Nokia 7 as it includes an extra camera sensor. That, however, might not be an absolute advantage as the premium Carl Zeiss optics on the Nokia 7 could very well swing the scales in its favor. We will, however, have to wait to know for sure.

The battery performance on both Nokia 7 and Moto X4 is backed by 3000mAh non-removable batteries, each with fast charging support.

Verdict

Lenovo-owned Motorola is launching the successor to its flagship Moto X device after a long time. With the new Moto X4, the company will be looking to widen its share and expand its base to the mid-range smartphone category.

2017 has been the year for Nokia’s resuscitation. While the Nokia 8 was a premium high-end offering, the 7 could potentially have the cash registers ringing.

Both phones are quite close in terms of hardware and software used and the choice between the two will ultimately boil down to their final price and camera performance.
