Even though it first went official around 5 months back (which is like ages in tech time), the phone still makes a lot of sense in India, simply because Nokia has priced it competitively. For Rs. 14,999 INR, Nokia 6 promises Aluminum build and premium Android experience. But does it deliver?

Question: How is the Nokia 6 design?

Answer:  Nokia 6 looks absolutely beautiful. As we have stated before, this is one of those phones that looks much better in person than in pictures. And in our opinion, the silver color works best.

The handset has a gorgeous aluminum body with sharp edges. The back isn’t totally flat but is adorned with very subtle curves towards all edges. In line with the modern trends, there are U-shaped antenna bands on the rear and 2.5D glass on the black fascia.

The fingerprint sensor is present on the front, interposed between the back and recent apps key, below the display and the audio jack is present up top.

The design and build are primary strengths of Nokia 6. But those sharp edges are rather susceptible to damage and you will have to plant it in a case as soon as possible.

Answer: HMD Global is using a very good quality IPS LCD panel on the Nokia 6. Dynamic range, color contrast, viewing angles and outdoor visibility are good. This is one of the best displays available in this price range.

Answer – The option to switch to the sRGB color mode is present under developer settings, but you cannot enable it. If you turn it on, it will be disabled automatically when you leave the developer settings menu. The phone adheres to NTSC gamut by default and thus whites are blue-ish.

Answer: The phone has adaptive brightness like all other stock Android phones. Brightness adjusted reasonably well on its own and we didn’t have to tinker with the brightness levels very often.

Answer: At the time of first boot, about 2.0GB free RAM was available. You can conveniently multi task or play games with Nokia 6 without RAM management coming in the way.

Answer: The fingerprint sensor is very fast and accurate, it’s however very narrow and a little too close to the bottom edge and that gets in the way at times. And yes, it’s always on.

Question: How is the day-to-day or general performance? How is gaming performance of Nokia 6?

Answer: The day to day performance is perfectly smooth, if not outright snappy. Nokia 6 is significantly faster than other Snapdragon 430 phones that we have used (Redmi 4, Lenovo K6 power, etc.).

We tried a couple of graphic intensive games like Asphalt 8 and NFS and they ran surprisingly well. At highest settings, we did observe a few frame drops, but the games were very much playable.

Question: Does Nokia 6 have heating issues?

Answer: The phone felt warm when ever subjected to heavy usage (or even regular usage), but when checked using the heat gun, the temperature was within control.

The point being, the phone gets warm with charging, or while playing games for extended durations or when the camera app remains open for a long time, but that’s perhaps more because of the quality of Aluminum used on the phone. Also, it cools down pretty fast.

Answer: Yes, the Gyroscope sensor is present. Google cardboard and other VR apps are supported.

Camera

Question: How is the Nokia 6 camera quality?

Answer: The Nokia 6 camera can click good shots outdoors, but the camera software gets confused with tricky exposures. We found ourselves using the HDR Mode very often for more balanced metering.

The camera performance indoor seems fine, but not immaculate. Sometimes the image processing software over-sharpens the images clicked indoors to compensate for noise and a few times we encountered shutter lags. By default camera shoots 4:3 aspect ratio images with both front and rear cameras.

Overall, the camera on the Nokia 6 can shoot some great images when the lighting is good or even indoors, but not effortlessly. It isn’t anything out of the ordinary and is pretty much on par with what most other manufacturers offer in this budget.

Answer: The Selfie camera can is a good performer. You will need to keep your hands steady in low light, though.

Answer: You can record up to 1080p full HD videos from both front and rear cameras.

Answer: HMD global is using almost stock Android software on the Nokia 6. Which is to say, there are no added frills in the UI, but the software is smooth and well optimized. UI transitions are fast.

Nokia has made some cosmetic changes to the launcher and added a few gestures as well (double press power key to open camera, mute on pick up, and turn over to reject call).

Nokia 6 Quick Review – Should you buy it?

There is an unwritten different between a premium phone and affordable phone experience and the Nokia 6 certainly belongs to the former class. It’s a well-built phone that looks gorgeous, has a good quality display, and has the well-optimized software. The experience of the handset exceeds the notion we had while examining the spec-sheet. Don’t expect the camera performance to be extraordinary, though.

Its only limitation is the 32GB storage (22GB free at user end) and hybrid SIM slot. In the Reliance Jio era, most of us need two SIM cards, which means there is no scope for expanding storage using an SD card. So, if you can live within the bounds of 22GB storage, we have no qualms about recommending Nokia 6 to you.
