Design and Build

Nokia seemingly started from where it left off. The design and build quality of the Nokia 5 are top class. At least in the design and build quality criteria, the Nokia 5 seems to punch above its price tag. The phone feels tough with anodized aeroplane grade aluminum built. The 5.2-inch compact device has slightly curved edges on both front (thanks to 2.5D glass) and back. All in all, the phone looks and feels great in the hand.

The Moto G5 boasts of a 5-inch display which ensures that it’s compact in size. This Moto G4 successor has also ditched plastic for a metallic back which can be removed. It has an all metal front with indented fingerprint sensor home button. The silver lining around speaker on the front and primary camera at the back enhances its style quotient. It is definitely most appealing design we have seen in Moto G ever.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, on the other hand, comes with a perfect cocktail of all metal chassis, a 2.5D glass on top and chamfered edges on the sides. All components mounted on the rear side are symmetrically aligned. Having said that, thanks to its large display and mammoth battery it is not exactly the most compact and lightest devices being scrutinized in this comparison.

Display

The Nokia boasts a 5.2-inch HD display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. Although the Nokia 5 screen is bright and vibrant it is not as sharp as the competition which becomes more evident when you stare more closely. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

Its close competitor, the Moto G5 beats it hands down as it flaunts a 5-inch IPS Display which is sharpest among the three with pixel destiny of 441 ppi. It is also the brightest of them all. It offers good viewing angles and touch response.

The Redmi Note 4 is not too far behind as it comes with 5.5-inch full HD display with 2.5D glass layered on top. It offers good sunlight legibility and color are accurate too. Though it is a tad reflective, it offers vivid color and good viewing angles.

Hardware, Software, and  Battery

Hardware wise, the Redmi Note 4 has better configuration though, Moto G5 and Nokia 5 clearly have an edge on the software side of business. The Redmi Note 4 employs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset clocked at 2GHz and an integrated Adreno 506 GPU. Xiaomi offers the Redmi Note 4 in three RAM configurations – 2GB, 3GB, and 4GB – with 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. To power up, it gets a 4000mAh battery which certainly beats down both of its competitors.

The Moto G5 and Nokia 5 feature almost identical hardware under the hood. Both of them bank upon Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset along with Adreno 505 GPU to take care of most day to day challenges. While the Moto G5 is offered in 16GB Internal storage, 2GB and 3GB RAM options, the Nokia 5 is only offered with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. Both of them manage to perform a majority of basic tasks without facing any trouble, but they take few extra seconds coming in and out of the games and apps. In terms of battery size, Nokia 5 comes second with its 3000mAh battery while Moto G5 comes last with its 2800mAh battery.

Software wise, Moto G5 and Nokia 5 both run on Android Nougat which gives them an edge over Redmi Note 4. The Moto G5 also comes with additional gestures support. Since both of these are running near stock android they are less taxing on system resources as compared to custom UI of Xiaomi. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 comes running on MIUI8 which is based on Android Marshmallow. Nokia has promised Android O update for the Nokia 5 as and when it becomes official, which is sadly not the case with other two competitors.

Camera

Let’s talk about the Moto G5 camera first. It trimmed down version of Moto G5 Plus comes with a 13MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and LED flash. For selfie enthusiasts, it gets a 5-megapixel front shooter.  The Nokia 5, on the other hand, features an 8-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and 1.12 µm pixel size. It gets a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash.

Xiaomi Redmi Note features similar optics. It flaunts a 13-megapixel primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, and dual tone flash. There is a 5-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture on the front with beautification software features.

Where does the Nokia 5 stand?

Ever since Nokia made a comeback it has only taken calculated steps. Instead of going all guns blazing it has decided first focus on a budget range with Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 all of them manages to cast a positive first impression.
