A fresh threat looms over the mobile users in India. Speculations are rife that mobile customers might have to go through the tedious task of providing KYC (Know Your Customer) documents once again but this time around citizens might have to submit documents other than Aadhar. This revelation comes into light following the recent judgment passed by the hon’ble Supreme Court of India. According to the recent developments, the Supreme Court has restrained any private company from using the Unique Aadhar ID for user authentication.

Reports are emerging that over 50 crore mobile connections are at the risk of being disconnected if the new order comes into implementation. The matter is now being discussed among the top officials of the government. Telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan has commented that they are trying to ensure that customers do not face any inconvenience due to the transition. Officials also reassured that customers will not face any disruptions during the new transition and users will be given ample time to complete the new process.

The major effect might be on Reliance Jio issued sim cards as they have taken the biometric route to give out the sim cards. The mobile companies will have to delete the records of earlier data and collect fresh data from the customers. They have said that they were asked to come up with an ‘exit plan’ by October 15 and further discussion will happen after the telecom ministry issues their instructions.

This could mean that mobile customers might have to submit their Passport or Driving license or Voter ID or any court-approved documentation to complete their fresh phase of e-KYC. We need to wait till we get an official statement to this regard to understand the severity of the issue.
