LG has a set ritual of making announcements just before the start of MWC and this year it did the same with its V30S ThinQ. Apart from the weird name, most of the specs are in line with various leaks and rumors of the V30+ successor. This 2018 flagship is basically a rehashed version of V30+ with new AI CAM and some other software improvements.

This is not the first time LG has launched a new product with ‘ThinQ’ branding.  The South Korean giant has used the same moniker in several other AI home and consumer electronics devices.

LG’s AI technology was developed in colaboration with EyeEM that beat Google and Microsoft last year in terms of image recognition accuracy.

LG V30S ThinQ Features

The LG V30S ThinQ looks exactly the same as the V30+. It is claimed to be one of the thinnest and lightest smartphones in its category with measurements of 7.3mm thinness and 158g weight. It retains the same 6-inch OLED FullVision display of the V30 which comes with 18:9 aspect ratio and QuadHD+ resolution (2880 x 1440 / 538ppi).

For this flagship grade 2018 offering, LG persists with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile processor which is coupled with 6GB of RAM. The LG V30S is offered with 128GB/256GB as default storage options. Both the variants support microSD storage up to 2TB.

In optics, there is no change on the hardware front. The V30 gets the same combination of 16-megapixel with f/1.6 aperture and a 13-megapixel wide-angle f/1.9 aperture sensor with 120-degree field-of-view. For selfies, it features a 5-megapixel wide-angle camera with f/2.2 and 90-degree field-of-view.

Now the biggest difference between the LG V30 and the V30S camera is the integration of new AI CAM, the V30S’ main glittering feature. LG has licensed EyeEm Vision tool from EyeEm which is behind the AI Cam. It uses machine learning system to recognize objects and scenes so that AI Cam churn out better images and accurate colors.

Apart from this, LG also added a new Bright Mode and QLens image. The V30S Bright Mode, as the name suggests, will allow a user to take better pictures in low light by combining four pixels into one. However, this involves trading resolution for better-exposed images. The QLens, on the other hand, uses image recognition capabilities to scan QR codes for an improved shopping experience. The QLens is sort of similar works in the same fashion as the Bixby Vision in Samsung Mall.

On the software front, the LG V30S comes running on Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box. LG also introduced Voice AI, which lets a user open apps, fiddle with settings with voice commands. The Voice AI works alongside the Google Assistant. The phone comes with a 3,300mAh battery. It is IP68 rated water and dust resistance, supports 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC audio, face recognition, fingerprint sensor, and wireless charging.
