Design and Build Quality

Both the Redmi Note 5 Pro and Moto G6 have 18:9 displays and not-so-bezel-less fascias. The Moto G6 incorporates fingerprint sensor on the bottom bezel along with Motorola branding whereas the Redmi Note 5 Pro sports a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

From the rear, the Moto G6 flaunts an accustomed unibody design with a rounded-camera hump and the Moto dimple just below it. To tweak the design a little, Moto has given a 3D glass back on Moto G6, borrowed from its Moto X4. The phone also has curved edges that make it easy to hold and operate.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, flaunts a metal-plastic unibody design where the cameras are vertically-aligned at the top-right corners. Of the two, the Moto G6 looks better and is more comfortable to operate (and more compact).

Reasons why we think Moto G6 has a better design than Redmi Note 5 Pro are:

  • Premium glass-sandwich design.
  • More compact and ergonomic.
  • Camera module enhances its appeal.
  • Moto G6 is lighter compared to Redmi Note 5 Pro.
  • The fingerprint sensor is on the front where it is more convenient to use.

Display

On the display front, both handsets flaunt an FHD+ IPS LCD panel with 2260X1080 pixel resolution and visibly thin bezels on the side. There is a size difference though. The Moto G6 flaunts a 5.7-inch panel whereas the Redmi Note 5 Pro sports a 5.9-inch display. The difference doens’t seem like much on paper, but in practice – this makes Moto G6 noticeably compact.

As for display quality, it’s a tie.

Performance and Software

The Moto G6 is powered by 1.8Ghz Snapdragon 450 mobile-chipset, coupled with 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB storage. In the similar context, the Redmi Note 5 Pro rocks 1.8Ghz Snapdragon 636 mobile-chipset with same storage and RAM options, and thus it has an edge when it comes to performance.

Which one is better at task:

  • For high-end gaming and intense usage, it is the Redmi Note 5 Pro that enjoys an upper hand over the Moto G6.
  • The Redmi Note 5 Pro employs the latest chipset – SD 636, that uses the Kyro 260 cores to offer faster performance compared to Snapdragon 450’s Cortex A53 cores.
  • If you are a general user, the Moto G6 with variant with 4GB RAM/64GB storage won’t be a bad choice either.
  • The Moto G6 has a dedicated microSD card slot whereas the Redmi Note 5 Pro has Hybrid SIM slot to expand the storage.

As for the software, the Moto G6 runs on near stock-Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box whereas the Redmi Note 5 Pro will greet you with Android Nougat-based MIUI 9 custom UI. Xiaomi has started rolling out the Oreo update over-the-air, but we assume it will take some time before Xiaomi irons out the bugs.

Which software you like better will be a mattery of personal tase and should be the primary deciding factor while deciding between the two phones.

Camera and Battery

The Moto G6 and Redmi Note 5 Pro both sport a dual-rear camera setup of 12-megapixel primary sensor and 5-megapixel secondary sensor, backed by dual-tone LED flash. However, there is a slight difference between the selfie camera on both devices. The Moto G6 features a 16-megapixel sensor whereas the Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a 20MP shooter on the front.

With 4000mAh battery, the Redmi Note 5 Pro takes a massive lead over Moto G6’s mediocre 3000mAh battery. What holds the edge for Moto G6 is its turbo-charging technology that can give you hours of battery life in minutes.

Which one is better for photography?

  • The Redmi Note 5 Pro has better camera hardware of the two.
  • Moto G6, on the other hand, can shoot 1080p videos at 60fps along with Slow-mo videos.
  • The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, can shoot videos 1080p videos at 30fps.
  • Apart from this, both phones come with the portrait mode, panorama, and Manual mode.

Verdict

Both phones retail in India at a starting price of Rs. 13,999. But the Redmi Note 5 Pro base variant is better equipped than the top model of Moto G6. This makes Redmi Note 5 Pro comparitively cheaper.
