When Motorola started off with its E-series in India, there just weren’t any phones that offered latest Android version or focused on overall experience than specs in the entry level segment. The 4th gen Moto E devices, however, play by a different set of rules, which is understandable since they compete in a very different market and aren’t entry-grade phones anymore (that job has now been assigned to the Moto C series).  We did spend some time with the new Moto and here is what you need to know.

Moto E4 Plus and E4 Design and Build

  • Both Moto follow the same design, but the E4 is more compact, slimmer and lighter (thanks to a smaller battery inside)
  • These are first Moto phones with metal back plate (that also folds to form side edges). But Metal is also fairly common for under 10K these days, so Motorola is just catching up here.
  • The metal makes Moto E4 and E4 Plus feel quite premium in hands. These are also different than any other phone you would buy in this budget, and that shall play to their advantage.
  • The big battery on Moto E4 Plus and metal build makes it thick and bulky, but it was still lighter than what we’d expected.
  • Both phones also have a front mounted fingerprint sensor, that can function as an entire navigation bar (left swipe for back, right swipe for recent apps, tap for home)

Moto E4 Plus and E4 Display

  • The display quality felt reasonable in our short time with the phone.
  • Moto is using HD resolution on both phones, which means the Moto E4 Plus isn’t the sharpest display phone under 10,000 INR
  • Moto has also added a night mode that reduces blue light (under Moto actions) for night time reading.

Moto E4 Plus and E4 Software

How important is a phone’s software? The answer is VERY. Most budget buyers crave for better hardware, and for good reason too, but software is the part which often gets neglected. The interface and software is something you have to live with and interact with on a daily basis, and thus a mature OS is important.

  • Stock Android is one of the biggest strengths of Moto E4 Plus and Moto E4.
  • Moto has added ambient ‘Moto Display’ to the phone. That is to say, the display lights up when you lift the phone and allows you to see notifications and other details. You can also interact with these notifications without turning on the device
  • Under Moto actions, you get the option to toggle on ‘One button navigation’ and for one handed mode. Other gestures like Chop-chop for flashlight were missing.

Moto E4 Plus and E4 Hardware

  • Chipset on the Moto E4 Plus and E4 is quite feeble. Both phones are powered by 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6737 quad-core chipset, that’s also what powered the low-end Moto C Plus
  • The E4 has 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, which doesn’t inspire much confidence for long term usage
  • The E4 Plus is relatively better equipped with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage (only one variant will retail in India). This could be good enough to fuel light software on the device for basic users.
  • We didn’t experience any interface lag in our hands-on time, but that could very well change in the long run.
  • The massive 5000mAh battery on the Plus variant will allure people who prioritize battery life over everything else.
  • Both phones include dedicated MicroSD card slot for augmenting storage (no hybrid slot limitation)
  • Lenovo has also added Dolby Atmos audio to Moto E4 family.
  • We couldn’t extensively test camera performance on Moto E4 duo, but don’t expect anything groundbreaking.

Moto E4 Plus and E4 First Impression

The new Moto E4 Plus relies on its big battery and stock software, which are also factors that the low-end Moto C Plus was tailored around.

The Moto E4 is more compact and handy but at the expense of a big battery. And the paltry storage and memory shall also limit its performance.

Since both phones target a different set of consumers (online and offline) it would be unfair to compare the two. At the same time, Ideal Moto e4 would be the one combining the strengths of the two – compact form factor, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, and a big battery.

The Moto E4 makes sense for offline market, and the Moto E4 Plus will be a palatable option for anyone hunting for a long lasting battery option from a familiar brand and is comfortable buying from online stores.
