The motherboard issues seem to be making a problematic comeback, affecting not just one, but several OnePlus models, including the flagship models from the company—the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 10 Pro. While the exact reason for this is unknown, speculation is that this is being caused due to a recent SOTA update that OnePlus has started releasing recently for its devices.
SOTA update: enhancing or destroying devices?
Several users are reporting that their devices are dying unexpectedly after a recent SOTA (Software Over-The-Air) update, which appears to be the trigger for these issues. SOTA was supposed to enhance the user experience by providing updates regularly and on time, but it seems to be doing the exact opposite of the intended purpose.
₹42,000 to repair a ₹44,499 phone
To add insult to injury, most of these devices are now out of warranty. A user on X (formerly Twitter) shared that he was being charged ₹42,000 to replace his OnePlus 10 Pro’s motherboard.
What’s infuriating for many is that OnePlus is charging a steep ₹42,000 to replace the motherboard of a device that currently costs around ₹44,499 on Flipkart. This outrageous cost has left many users feeling ripped off.

OnePlus’s indifference
Users have flooded OnePlus community forums and social media platforms like Twitter with complaints, yet there’s been no meaningful response or resolution from OnePlus. One particular user, @that_chand, shared his experience where his OnePlus 9 Pro died right after a July SOTA update.
When he approached the service center, he was initially told that his device was irreparable and was told to purchase a new OnePlus phone. OnePlus simply refused to repair the device, leaving him in a lurch.
And mind you, this was the official OnePlus service center in Delhi. Here are the exact words: “Nothing can be done to your device. The motherboard is dead. You should get a new OnePlus device.” I mean, what?
Now, it’s no mystery, especially for someone working at a service center, that a phone with a dead motherboard is repairable. The OnePlus 9 Pro is just over 3 years old and OnePlus already doesn’t have the spare parts? That’s just embarrassing.

Even more users, including those with a OnePlus 10R, faced the same ‘motherboard dead’ issue. All of these devices have one thing in common—the recent July SOTA update.
And those devices that didn’t get dead by the SOTA update, received a ton of bugs and issues, making them practically impossible to drive daily. The OnePlus 12, which is supposed to be a flagship, has been plagued with bugs, making it almost unusable, and battery life problems are being reported across various OnePlus models.
OnePlus’s indifference to these problems is deeply concerning. Unlike brands like POCO and Xiaomi, which addressed similar motherboard issues in the past, OnePlus seems to be conveniently ignoring their customers’ cries for help. All they do is give a vague reply with no help.
Dear OnePlus, do better
Given how they addressed the Green Line issue, it’s baffling to me as to why they are not addressing these motherboard problems with the same urgency. OnePlus must step up and either offer free replacements or repair the affected devices. Continuing to ignore these issues will only tarnish their reputation further.
