Microsoft plans to completely shut down its smartphone wing. The firm had killed the production of its Windows phones years back, and now they have confirmed that they will no longer provide software support or updates to the existing mobiles.
Microsoft’s Senior Program Manager, Brandon LeBlanc, confirmed it on Twitter saying “no mobile builds are coming” on Windows phones. This means that the Fall Creator Update, released months back, was the last Windows Phone update.

No more bug fixes or security patches
The computer OS firm, Microsoft, journeyed its way into smartphone business when it took the reigns from Nokia in 2013. From then on, Microsoft manufactured its own phones that came running on Windows OS out of the box. However, soon they had to pull the plug on the phone as they failed to gain substantial market share.
Even after gutting down phone’s business, Microsoft maintained the tradition of rolling out monthly incremental updates, bug fixes and security patches to the existing Windows 10 phones. Although these updates didn’t add new features, yet they did improve the overall experience.

That doesn’t mean that this is the last that we hear of a Windows OS-supported mobile phone. As per Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, “if Microsoft is to ever come back to the mobile phones market, it will be with a device which is completely different from the ones we saw until now.”
Meanwhile, we have seen multiple patent leaks of Microsoft futuristic Surface Phone, but nothing is official yet.
