MediaTek has launched Dimensity 9000 Chipset which the company plans to offer for premium smartphones, thus coming in direct competition with Qualcomm which currently dominates this field.

The Taiwan-based company claims that Dimensity 9000 will be the world’s first chipset to use its manufacturing partner ‘Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co’s “N4” chipmaking process, which has made the chipset smaller and faster. It will also be the first SoC ever to feature a powerful new computing core from Arm called Cortex X2.

MediaTek is one of the only 3 firms in the world that currently makes 5G smartphone chips, the other 2 being Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics. This is because the fourth player Huawei was forced out of the market by US Sanctions.

David Ku, MediaTek’s chief financial officer said that the 9000 chip was the first in what will be a series of chips aimed at persuading those customers to switch to using MediaTek in their flagship devices.

“We need to have a very strong army to march into the segment,” Ku told Reuters. “One product is not enough- this is our starting point.”

MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Chipset Specs

The newly launched Dimensity 9000 features the Cortex-X2, the most powerful CPU core from Arm, and an octa-core CPU setup, consisting of 1x Arm Cortex-X2 clocked at 3GHz, 3x Arm Cortex- A710 cores clocked at 2.85GHz, and 4x efficiency Arm Cortex-A510 Cores.

It is built on TSMC’s 4nm process and uses the new Arm V9 architecture, a direct successor to the Armv8. MediaTek has added Arm Mali-G710 GPU which claims a 20% better performance than its predecessors in graphics and gaming. Also, the company is releasing a raytracing SDK that will help game developers add new visual techniques to their Android games.

The SoC supports LPDDR5x memory with up to 7500 Mbps bandwidth and includes 14MB of cache, which is expected to boost speed by 7% and reduce bandwidth usage by 25% compared to an 8MB cache.

The GPU used in Dimensity 9000 can drive a FullHD+ display at a 180Hz refresh rate. The chipset has its 18 bit HDR ISP for imaging, allowing users to take 4K HDR video with up to 3 cameras at once or still images with up to a gigantic 320MP sensor.

The ISP clocks in at 9 Gigapixels per second. It also has a “Super Night Video Recording’ for recording videos at night. MediaTek has equipped Dimensity 9000 with Bluetooth 5.3 standard, Wi-Fi 6E 2×2, Wireless Stereo Audio, and Bediou III-B1 C GNSS support for connectivity.

MediaTek 9000 to take on Snapdragon 800 head-on?

Qualcomm has mostly dominated the space when it comes to being used in premium Android smartphones, but with the launch of Dimensity 9000 things can change. Qualcomm is also expected to announce its new flagship chip at the annual summit in a few weeks, but MediaTek seems to be beating its rival to the punch with several next-gen features.

Also, with all these chip announcements, it is important to remember that in the end, it is up to the companies, that how well they implement these new features. But since devices powered by Dimensity 9000 SoC are expected to be available early in 2022, we won’t have to wait too long to find out how this chipset performs in the real world.
