MediaTek has launched the successor to the Helio P60 released earlier this year. Helio P60 featured in a number of smartphones this year and MediaTek is now looking to further increase their market share with the new chipset, the Helio P70. The Helio P70 will feature majorly in the mid-range smartphones and will compete with the Snapdragon 710 processor.

MediaTek Helio P70 is more or less similar to Helio P60 and has been developed on the same 12nm process. It packs eight cores with four of them being Arm Cortex-A73 2.1 GHz processors and the other four being Arm Cortex-A53 2.0 GHz processors. On the graphics front, it is bundled with a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU operating at up to 900 MHz, which provides a 13 percent improvement in performance compared to Helio P60.

Addressing the launch, TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication said:

“With an enhanced AI engine that works seamlessly across the CPU and GPU, Helio P70 delivers much faster performance for AI applications and is still highly power efficient, The introduction of Helio P70 continues MediaTek’s commitment to deliver high-end smartphone features and advanced technology for the mass market.”

Helio P70’s AI engine delivers a 10 to 30 percent increase in AI processing as compared to the earlier Helio P60. That means Helio P70 can support more complex AI applications such as real-time human pose recognition and AI-based video encoding. Other than that, MediaTek’s AI  video encoder enhances video call quality even when connection bandwidth is limited.

Helio P70 has been developed on MediaTek’s NeuroPilot platform, the company’s comprehensive hardware and software ecosystem to support edge AI. This NeuroPilot platform supports common AI frameworks like TensorFlow, TF Lite, Caffe, Caffe2 and custom third-party offerings.

Helio P70’s enhanced GPU also imparts a better overall gaming experience. It is optimized to reduce frame-rate jitter, improve latency for touch controls and display visuals for a smooth and fluid gaming experience. Helio P70 comes with a 4G LTE modem that supports speeds up to 200 Mbits/sec. This chipset also includes support for dual VoLTE.

MediaTek is trying to get a grip of the budget and mid-range segments with the recent launches and they must be hoping to get hold of more Chinese manufacturers with the new processor. The Helio P70 is in production now and is speculated to be available in consumer devices by November.
