MapMyIndia, the homegrown digital maps service, has accused Ola Electric, one of the largest cab operators in the country, of copying proprietary data and integrating it into Ola Maps. The company behind MayMyIndia, CE Info Systems, has issued a legal notice against Ola Electric, saying that the latter has “duplicated” the former’s API (application programming interface) and SDKs (software development kits) “to build Ola Maps.”

CE Info Systems Sends Ola Electric A Legal Notice
According to a report by Forbes India, CE Info Systems states that Ola Electric has “copied/derived” the exclusive data and used it to create its own navigation service, Ola Maps. However, an Ola spokesperson states that “these allegations are false, malicious, and misleading.” Further, the company mentions that “Ola Electric stands by the integrity of its business practices. We will suitably respond to the notice shortly.”
For those catching up, Ola Electric and MayMyIndia entered an agreement wherein the former could use the latter’s digital maps service. However, MayMyIndia prohibited the other company from combining any licensed product with other competing products, reverse engineering the product/service or extracting/copying the source code from any application programming interface. Interestingly, Ola Electric just announced Ola Maps, which could save the company Rs. 100 crore that otherwise went to Google Maps.

However, the claim by MapMyIndia suggests that Ola might have infringed its intellectual property. Whether the legal notice sparks a lawsuit between the two Indian companies and how they respond to each other’s claims is something that will unfold with time. It is important to mention that Ola Electric is gearing up to launch an IPO on August 2, 2024, aiming to raise thousands of crores. Check out more details about the Ola Electric IPO here.
