Mahindra XEV 9S vs. Competition: Key Takeaways

  • If you look at XEV 9S’ length, it is the longest seven-seater SUV in the segment. The SYB eMax 7 comes in second (4710 mm), and the Carens Clavis EV comes in third (4550). However, the car is shorter than Mahindra’s other five-seater eSUV, the XEV 9e (by 52 mm).
  • When it comes to width, the XEV 9S (1900 mm) is the widest among its direct competitors. However, the two popular five-seater eSUVs, the Harrier EV (1922 mm) and the XEV 9e (1907 mm), are a tad wider.
  • In terms of headroom, the XEV 9S (1745 mm) offers the most among the eSUVs in this comparison, resulting in ample headroom.
  • Mahindra hasn’t disclosed the actual boot space of the XEV 9S. The company has only disclosed that the boot expands to 500 liters with the third row folded. If the numbers are accurate, the boot is still smaller than the Carens Clavis EV and the BYD eMAX 7 (with or without the third row folded).
  • Speaking of storage, the XEV 9S, along with the XEV 9e, offers the largest frunk in the segment (150 liters).
  • The same is true for the ground clearance as well. The XEV 9S has a ground clearance of 201 mm when unloaded, followed by the Clavis EV at 200 mm and the eMax 7 at 170 mm.
  • The BYD eMax 7 comes out on top with the segment’s largest wheelbase (2800 mm), which should result in ample interior legroom and a smooth, comfortable ride. The Clavis EV (2780 mm) and the XEV 9S (2762 mm) follow in second and third place, respectively

  • Whether it is the seven-seater EVs on the market or the five-seater options, Mahindra currently offers the largest battery packs across its entire EV lineup.
  • The XEV 9S comes with three battery options: 59 kWh (521 km), 70 kWh (600 km), and 79 kWh (679 km). While the Clavis EV is available only in 42 kWh (404 km) and 51.4 kWh (490 km) options, the BYD eMax 7 offers 55.4 kWh (420 km) and 71.8 kWh (530 km).
  • Given that the vehicle has the largest battery capacity among its direct competitors, it should offer the highest real-world range as well, around 500 to 550 kilometers. For better understanding, EVs generally last around 10-20% less in real-world conditions than their tested or claimed range.
  • Among the Clavis EV and the BYD eMax 7, it is the latter that offers a more powerful and responsive drivetrain on the higher trim (204 PS / 310 Nm vs. 171 PS / 255 Nm). The XEV 9S delivers 286 PS and 380 Nm of torque.
  • While Mahindra offers a lifetime warranty on the battery for the first owner, Kia and BYD offer an 8-year or 160,000-kilometer warranty. Meanwhile, among the five-seater options, the Tata Harrier EV, the Mahindra XEV 9e, and the BE 6 offer a lifetime warranty for the first owner.

  • The charging speed for the largest battery pack on the XEV 9S reaches 180 kW via a DC charger, while home charging remains at 11.2 kW AC. The Clavis EV supports a maximum of 100W via DC charger and 11 kW via AC charger, while the BYD eMax 7 supports 150 kW DC charging and 7.2 kW AC charging.
  • Among the three EVs, the XEV 9S offers the largest alloy wheels (up to 18 inches). However, Tata and Mahindra both offer up to 19-inch alloys on their five-seater performance EVs, such as the Harrier EV and the Mahindra BE 6.
