Mahindra has teased something new. Amid anticipation around the new Mahindra Thar EV and the Scorpio EV, the brand has teased a new Freedom Nu event on Independence Day this year. It is expected that Mahindra will unveil the Thar EV, the Scorpio EV, and the Scorpio pickup during the event next month.
While there is little to no information about what the electric Mahindra SUVs will be all about, we did see the Thar.E Vision concept last year during an auto show. Apart from that, the rumour mill has been doing its job and we have seen leaks and rumours around the Thar EV – from design renders to features and battery packs, reports do speculate a lot of things.
In this article, we will tell you everything that we know about the Thar EV – from launch date to the design, to what features and battery packs one should expect. Let’s take a look:
Thar EV – Expected Launch Date
The Thar EV is one of the most anticipated electric SUVs. Reported to be launched somewhere in the early 2026 or late 2025. The Mahindra Thar EV, which is being called the Vision.T concept, may be unveiled at the Freedom_Nu event that Mahindra has announced for August 15. Apart from the Thar EV or the Vision.T concept, Mahindra is also expected to unveil the Scorpio EV (Vision.S) and the Scorpio pickup (Vision.SXT) during the August 15 event.
Thar EV – Design and Dimensions
Last year, during an auto show in South Africa, Mahindra had showcased the Thar E concept for the first time. Given the anticipation around an all-electric Thar, we got to see the concept in detail, thanks to a slew of content that followed after the showcase. Here are a few things in terms of design and dimensions that we saw last year.
First and foremost, the car has a modernised Thar look. It looks modern yet rugged. It doesn’t look like a Thar but it looks like a mean machine – an EV that is ready to take on all kinds of terrains. The Thar.E Vision concept that we saw last year had a massive flat bonnet. New light design with smaller lights and a flat grille with Thar.E badging and slated LED lights.
We also saw other design elements like the jeep-like styling and massive ground clearance with thick skidplates and sidesteps. The major change in design will come in the frame. The electric version of the Mahindra Thar will come with a monocoche frame, going away from the traditional ladder-frame that the Thar is known for.
Thar EV – Battery And Performance
In terms of the battery and performance, the Mahindra Thar EV is expected to come with multiple battery options. Reports suggest that the battery size will be somewhere between 60kWh and 80kWh. The Thar EV will be based on Mahindra’s new Inglo-P1 platform that the brand has developed for EVs specifically. It is also reported that there will be a dual motor setup powering the Thar EV, and the expected range of the car is said to be somewhere around 500 kilometers.
Apart from this, the Thar EV is also expected to come with some new off-road tech like 4×4, hill assist, differential locks, adjustable suspension and more. During last year’s showcase, the Thar.E Vision concept showcased 18-inch all-terrain wheels, which need 23 PSI to 38 PSI of air pressure.
Thar EV – Interior and Features
Interiors of the Thar EV or Thar Electric or Thar.E are yet to be showcased in real life, but we have seen renders of the same previously. The interiors showcase a boxy space which has a lot of tech and a lot of rugged materials all around. We are expecting a lot of hard plastic and rubberised materials on the Thar EV, which means that the interiors will be easily washable.
We also saw a two-spoke steering wheel from the renders last year and an overall rugged and chunky feel to the interiors.
Thar EV – Everything We Know
Now there is very limited information available about the Thar EV, but the rumor mill is doing it’s job and we did get to see a concept last year from Mahindra. We expect the Thar EV to be one of the most off-road capable electric cars in the market. It will borrow things from the ICE variants of the Thar, but will also introduce many new features and off-road or camping capabilities with features like vehicle-to-load.
The Thar EV, however, may not be appreciated among the Thar purists, since going electric is a big move away from the Mahindra Thar’s reputation of being the big, bad SUV that you can take anywhere.
