Lenovo Legion Slim 7 Review: Design

A first glance at the design of the Lenovo Slim 7 laptop will make you realize that the brand has gone for a totally fresh design aesthetic for this one, from its other Legion laptops. The laptop is sleek and decorated with lines to match its premium price tag. It is a perfect balance of professional and casual looks and although it might look like a work laptop from the top, opening the lid will reveal all about its gamer-esque features.

The laptop’s body is made of high-grade aluminum metal that feels nice to touch and gives it a strong build. The lid has a Lenovo logo at the top left and is prone to smudges and fingerprints. The bottom side of the laptop has a large vent for ventilation and rubber feet for stability. The corners are rounded but still feel sharp while handling. The sides feature I/O ports and air-cooling vents.

When you open the lid, you will find that the interiors look as amazing as the exteriors. The metal body is smooth for the keyboard and trackpad. The display has bezels and the Lenovo legion logo and the power button just below it. The power button doubles as a fingerprint sensor and the hinge are slim yet strong. The display has a 180-degree hinge and is light enough to be opened and closed with one finger. The keyboard has RGB lighting which looks beautiful when turned on. The laptop stays true to its slim name as it weighs 1.9 kgs and has a thickness of 15.9mm. It is easy to carry around and beats laptops like Infinix Inbook X1 in terms of sleekness.

If you are a gamer who works and travels a lot, the Lenovo Legion Slim 7 can be your good partner on the go.

Lenovo Legion Slim 7 Review: Display & Sound

The Lenovo Legion Slim 7 sports a 15.6-inch WQHD display with a 2560×1440 pixel resolution. It has a refresh rate of 165Hz which can be felt while one is gaming as the visuals are smooth and fast on the screen. As for the color accuracy, the laptop has 100% sRGB support and that is visible on the screen as the colors are bright, paunchy, and lifelike. Whether it was streaming 4k content or playing games like BGMI, the display is impressive in both aspects. The high resolution gave detailed visuals that made gaming even more fun. The G-Sync support for tear-free gaming also helps gamers have fun for long durations without a break.

The display supports 300 nits peak brightness and this is one thing I found underwhelming if your room is exposed to excessive sunlight. The low peak brightness did not allow the display to be clearly visible under direct sunlight and the brightness had to be turned up when outdoors. Otherwise, the matte display was soothing, although there is no HDR support and even the viewing angles could have been better. The colors are never oversaturated and the blacks are deep and rich with minimal greying. The laptop comes with an X-Rite color assistant that allows one to select different color profiles for the perfect match. The text displayed is clear and sharp eye strain is minimal as well. Apart from peak brightness, viewing angles, and no HDR support, the display is decent.

Coming to audio, Slim 7 has a dual speaker set-up that sits at the bottom of the device. The speakers are tuned by Harman Kardon and feature Nahimic audio. The speakers are loud enough, especially when on 100% volume level but there is no depth or character in the audio. Although the audio doesn’t distort even at max volumes, the bass doesn’t have the richness required for good quality audio of music, and games. The speakers just about do their job and are nothing special at all.

Lenovo Legion Slim 7 Review: I/O Ports & Connectivity

The I/O Ports, vents, and ducts are all placed very smartly on the Lenovo Legion Slim 7. It gets 2 USB 3.2 Type-C Gen 2 ports on the right side and a 3.5mm headphone jack, and an SD Card reader on the left side. There are a pair of USB Type-A ports at the backside with one port having an always-on function and power-in. Some important ports are missing in this laptop and that is one of the major drawbacks of the device. There is no HDMI port, or an ethernet port, maybe because they would have increased the thickness of the Slim 7 device. Although an HDMI port can still be ignored, the lack of a LAN port can be a bummer.

In terms of wireless connectivity, it comes with Killer WiFi AX1650 and Bluetooth 5.1. No ethernet port means one always has to carry a USB dongle, and that might be a pro or a con for you depending on the kind of user you are.

Lenovo Legion Slim 7 Review: Keyboard, Trackpad & Numpad

The Lenovo Legion Slim 7 comes with an attractive keyboard that has been divided into neat sections and doesn’t make the keys feel small while typing. The key travel is average, but that can’t be held against the device. There is RGB lighting which is easy to control and Lenovo’s shortcuts make it easy to switch between lighting modes, brightness, and more. Since my job involves a lot of typing throughout the day, a good keyboard is an important factor for me in any laptop I use. Lenovo Slim 7 did not disappoint as typing on it was a smooth experience. The keys are not too tactile and feel good beneath the fingers. I could type almost 65 words per minute which are the same as my normal typing speed. Gaming too is fun as the keys registered movements swiftly.

There is a dedicated Numpad as well that sits on the right side of the laptop. It does its job well.

The trackpad is large and works well for all your gaming needs. It is a glass surface multi-touchpad that doesn’t have a texture. The fingers move smoothly over it but the clicks on it feel a little rough. Moreover, it is placed in the wrong position to the left which can be annoying for some. But once you get used to it, there won’t be any issues.

Lenovo Legion Slim 7 Review: Performance & Gaming

The India variant of the Lenovo Legion Slim 7 laptop is powered by AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors. The unit I have is powered by AMD Ryzen 5800H with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD storage. It is paired with Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU and 6GB GDDR6 VRAM. It runs Windows 11 out of the box with Lenovo Vantage software and lots of Windows bloatware.

During my daily usage as a writer, I don’t really need too much hardware performance. Sometimes, though there are 20-22 tabs open simultaneously with different apps and websites, the same happened while I was using Slim 7 too. The laptop passed the test with flying colors as whether it was 2 tabs or 20, there was no difference in its performance. It ran smoothly without any lag or stutter. Even while charging, the functioning of the device was seamless. During editing tasks when heavy apps are used, the laptop worked well then too.

The laptop is good for gaming with above 60 fps frame rates at Ultra High graphics, which keep resolution 1080p or lower. Games like Asphalt 9 and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds ran smoothly for hours, without crashing while delivering stable framerates. The only issue you will experience is poor thermal performance, especially while gaming. The Laptop gets too hot around the middle of the keyboard after a while of gaming. So much so, that pressing some keys became uncomfortable as they were too hot. Though heating up doesn’t affect the performance of the laptop in any way, it can be annoying for some users. Here are the results of some benchmark tests that I performed on the Lenovo Legion Slim 7 Laptop.

The webcam and microphone on the Legion Slim 7 are pretty basic like they are on most laptops. The webcam has 720p quality and captures decent images and videos that are grainy. The microphone is average when recording sounds. The audio clips recorded are mostly clear if there is no noise in the background. The webcam and mic are fine for casual users but professionals will have to use their specialized gears for better output.

In short, if you are a gamer who has another form of daily usage as well, Legion Slim 7 will work perfectly well for you.

Lenovo Legion Slim 7 Review: Battery

The Lenovo Legion Slim 7 packs a 73Wh battery that does a decent job. Even though the brightness was set at 100%, and the usage was moderate, the battery lasted for about 4.5 hours before I had to charge it. Watching videos and having long gaming sessions, drains out the battery faster than usual but the 230W charging adapter charged the battery pretty quick. With moderate to light usage, the battery lasted for about 6-6.5 hours when the brightness was also turned down. The charger is not very lightweight but just like the laptop, it is slimmer than usual as well.

Lenovo Legion Slim 7 Review Verdict: Should you buy it?

The Lenovo Legion Slim 7 is a device that seems to hit a good balance between performance and compactness. It not only has a powerful processor, display, and GPU but also is slim, lightweight, and easy to carry on the go. It works well for gamers as well as working professionals, content creators as well as corporates. Though it does have niggles like not so strong battery, smudge magnet lid, and limited I/O ports, it is a laptop that gives top-of-the-line gaming performance. Starting at a price of Rs. 1,44,990 in India, Legion Slim 7 might feel expensive to some, but if you need a device that offers powerful performance and portability side by side, then it can be a smart choice for you.
