OTT Streaming Platform Jio Cinemas has been in the news for a while now, mainly because it is currently streaming the biggest extravaganza of cricket, IPL 2023 in over 11 languages and 4K quality, that too free for everyone. Now, after the successful streaming of IPL 2023 via the Jio Cinema app, Reliance Industries’ Jio Studios is getting ready to take the Original Content market by storm.

Yesterday in a grand event held at the Jio Convention Center, Jio Studios announced over 100 web series and movies that the studio is producing. These include not only Hindi but also Marathi, Bengali, and Gujarati content that will stream on the Jio Cinema app in the future. While some of these movies will first have a theatrical release, others will be directed to OTT streaming.

The line-up is extremely vast with over 100 stories already created to be told to the world. It includes popular titles like Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree 2 and Varun Dhawan’s Bhediya 2. The content will start rolling out in May, with the first big release being Shahid Kapoor’s action thriller ‘Bloody Daddy’ which will stream directly to OTT from June 9.

With this move, Jio Studios is all set to give tough competition to OTT giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar, and more.

History of Jio Studios

Jio Studios began its pathbreaking career with Amar Kaushik’s directorial debut Stree in 2018. The horror comedy starring Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkumar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, and others was loved for its plot, performances, music, and scary moments. The success of Stree led to a horror comedy universe that included Janhvi Kapoor’s Roohi and Varun Dhawan’s Bhediya.

Investment & Distribution involved in Jio Studios

The content studio has spent Rs. 2000 crore on producing content with the bulk of these investments happening in the last 2 years. There are plans to double the investment as content production amps up offerings in several Indian languages. “It took 3 years to complete this slate of 100+ stories. We will start rolling out this content in May,” Deshpande said. The studio has completed 5 years of operation and released 50 content assets across movies and web shows.

“We have not even scratched the tip of South India. And as we double down on this market, we foresee the investment doubling over the next few years,” Jyoti Deshpande added.

As for the distribution strategy for the movies, some movies will follow the traditional release in theatres first followed by OTT streaming, while others will be released digitally, but marketed like a theatrical release.

The content slate including about 100 stories has made Jio Studios the biggest content studio in the country by a long mile.
