Cupertino-based giant Apple Inc. introduced an innovative new emergency SOS satellite connectivity feature in its latest iPhone 14 series. The feature enables users to connect to emergency services using satellite connectivity when they are stuck somewhere and don’t have access to cellular networks or WiFi.

The SOS Satellite Connectivity feature proved to be a lifesaver for a man who was stranded amidst snow in Alaska. Read on to know what the entire incident is.

Apple iPhone 14 Satellite Connectivity saves life

According to a report by MacRumors, a man traveling from Noorvik to Kotzebue in Alaska got stranded in a cold, remote location on the 1st of December 2022. His snowmobile went down and he was stuck among the snow-clad mountains. Fortunately for him, he was carrying his iPhone 14 with him. He immediately activated the emergency SOS via satellite on his iPhone and Apple’s Emergency Response Center altered the search and rescue department, sharing his GPS coordinates as shown by iPhone 14.

Alaska State Troopers worked with the local search and rescue teams and the Northwest Arctic Borough Search and Rescue Coordinator to save the stranded man. He was rescued without any injuries. Even more surprising is the fact that the satellite connectivity feature worked in an area that was on the edge of its range. Apple has claimed that the SOS feature might not work in places above 62-degree latitude, but the man was close to 69-degree latitude.

The rescue team also commended the accurate and complete information that the iPhone shared, which helped them rescue the man in record time. The Emergency SOS via satellite is free for 2 years after the activation of the iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro. It is currently available in North America but will soon be available in France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK.
