Intel embarks on the discrete graphics journey with the Iris Xe Max GPU. This is an entry-grade performer and will ship within thin-and-light laptops. Together with the integrated chip, the new Intel dGPU will power PCs based on the company’s Xe architecture. It primarily targets workflows including AI inferencing and video encoding.

Let’s see how it manages to achieve this synergy.

Intel Iris Xe Max Highlights

Intel has basically used the in-built Xe-LP GPU of 11th gen Tiger Lake CPU to build the Iris Xe Max. It is using a software framework called Deep Link to blend the power as well as leverage the maxed thermal ceilings.

The company claims:

  • a 20 percent gain in CPU performance whilst the GPU is inactive.
  • a 7 times faster AI-aided content workloads on the 11th Gen Core i7-1165G7 CPU plus Iris Xe Max GPU configuration compared to the 10th Gen Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU and Nvidia GeForce MX350 GPU setup.
  • 1.78X improved results in video encoding over a Core i9-10980HK plus GeForce RTX 2080 Super (MaxQ).

Iris Xe Max is made on 10th gen SuperFin fabrication and consists of up to 96 execution units and a max clock frequency of 1.65GHz. It supports PCIe 4.0 interconnects, 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM (with a bandwidth of 68GBps), up to four displays compatible with HDMI 2.0b, DisplayPort 1.4, and internal eDP, variable-rate shading, and adaptive sync.

Expect the new wave of laptops to hit the stores soon. Already, brands like Acer (Swift 3X), Dell (Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1), and Asus (VivoBook Flip TP470) have announced their offerings. We look forward to testing one of these against the competing chips from Nvidia and AMD.
