Intel unveils 12th-gen Alder Lake Mobile CPUs and updated Evo certification at CES 2022

0

On the second day of CES 2022, Intel has showcased the 12th-gen Alder Lake CPUs for both laptops and desktops based on Intel 7 process (10nm architecture effectively). This includes 45W H-series for high-end gaming and creator laptops and 28W P-series as well as 15W U-series for thin-and-light notebooks. Like the ARM-based chips, these Intel CPUs feature a hybrid heterogeneous structure comprising performance-centered cores and efficiency-focused cores. The processes would be managed by a scheduler called Thread Director.

The top-of-the-line chip is Core i9-12900HK (H stands for high-performance and K for unlocked) which is touted as the “fastest mobile processor ever created” and “the world’s best mobile gaming platform”. It consists of 6x P-cores (for performance) at a max of 5GHz frequency and 8x E-cores (for efficiency) clocking 2.5GHz. There is hyper-threading which results in a total of 20 threads. The setup also leverages quick memory from 24MB of the L3 cache. And as far as the power envelope is concerned, the base is 45W going all the way up to 115W.

Now on the GPU front, the built-in solution is equipped for 96 execution units and the company boasts up to 28% performance gains in games compared to the precursor, i.e., Core i9-11980HK.

Below the HK model lies the Core i9-12900H, Core i7-12800H, and Core i7-12700H with 14 cores, Core i7-12650H with 10 cores (4+6), Core i5-12600H and Core i5-12500H with 12 cores (4+8), and Core i5-12450H with 8 cores (4+4).

Intel also announced the P-series of chips for performance-centric thin and light notebooks that work within 45W and 64W power limits. There are 6 new models in this range including Core i7-1280P, Core i7-1270P, Core i7-1260P, Core i5-1250P, Core i5-1240P, and finally the Core i3-1220P.

And for the lower-end thin and light notebooks, foldable, etc, there is the U-series. This includes the Core i7-1265U, Core i7-1255U, Core i5-1245U, Core i5-1235U, Core i3-1215U, Pentium 8505, and Celeron 7305.
