After delivering on the triple-rear camera phone, Huawei is working on a foldable tablet-cum-smartphone. The Chinese smartphone maker has reportedly acquired a patent for foldable display phone that could become a tablet when completely unfurled.

According to Dutch site LetsGoDigital, the patent was originally filed on September 19, 2017, but it has been recently published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) website.

The patent leak comes after last year’s Huawei CEO, Richard Yu, comment which says that the company has a “working sample” for a foldable smartphone. He further added that the project is still in development, needs improvements to its design and flexible display tech before it’s ready to go mainstream.

According to the patent, the Huawei foldable phone will have two displays and will fold from the middle. The mechanism is going to be similar to that of ZTE’s Axon M, but unlike it, Huawei’s phone won’t feature double display. Instead, a single display which when fully expanded can stretch up to a table. Other information on the device is not known as of now.

Since the things are escalating so quickly for Huawei, reports suggest that its foldable phone could be released before the end of the year 2018.

Who else is working on a foldable phone?

Huawei isn’t the only one working on a foldable gadget, though. Big names including Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft all are working on their respective foldable phones and there are good chances that we might, after all, see one very soon.

Samsung’s foldable phone is expected to be released in 2019 as the Galaxy X. On the other hands, Apple is also rumored to be working on a similar phone, which could double up as a tablet – its launch is expected to happen in 2020. And Micromax is expected to launch its foldable surface phone before the end of 2018.
