HP Omen X 2S dual display gaming laptop launched in India

There is a deluge of gaming laptops out there boasting the best of specs and engineering marvels. It is a tough task to stand out from the crowd and HP’s answer to this dilemma is – “World’s first dual-screen gaming laptop.” HP launched the Omen X 2S in India parading a rad look, top-shelf specs, and dual displays.

This new laptop from the game-centric Omen series features a secondary screen. During the launch event, the presentation did slide through a few use case scenarios of this second display. We have had hands-on experience with it and well, the overall package. So, here is what we think of it from our first impression.

HP Omen X 2S Design and Build

The engineering team at HP has hit the sweet spot with a slim and sleek design. Although a heavyweight specs-wise, its actual heft is around 2.38kg only. The gaming notebook has an all-metal body that’s 20mm in thickness. Turn up the lid to see the display duo – a primary 15.6-inch LCD panel (144Hz refresh, full HD resolution and NVIDIA’s G-Sync compatible), accompanied by a secondary, 5.98-inch 1080p multitouch screen right above the RGB lit keyboard.

The unique value proposition is the complementary touchscreen panel. We termed it complementary because it has some software tricks up its sleeve. You could drag and drop web browser, music applications, discord chat window, etc to it. There is a dedicated key too for this action. For example: While you’re playing a game, you could pin its map from the main display onto this one. So, you could multitask in a vertical field of view.

That seems handy for sure! However, a second display would sip some of your battery juice. We are not sure whether all the apps and instances would perfectly function in this small display. As for nitpicking, we also doubt the display could become distracting while gaming in a dark environment.
Since, this display takes up some space up top, the keyboard is positioned a little lower than the usual case. The keys are satisfactorily clicky. However, we were scratching our head seeing the placement of touchpad at the far right side. HP, did you forget about the lefties amongst us? Granted, we would be using a mouse, still a weird design choice. You also get a detachable palm rest at the bottom.
Rest, it comes with B&O stereo speakers plus an amplifier, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and all the traditional network and connectivity ports and standards. There are exhaust vents at multiple places on the peripheral. With that, let’s dive deep into the internals.

HP Omen X 2S Under the hood

In terms of raw hardware, HP Omen X 2S could blow your specs checklist out of water. This gaming rig comes out in two variants with obvious differences in specs. The high-end variant is geared by 9th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, aided by NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 (MaxQ) GPU. This is coupled with 32GB of DDR4 SDRAM and up to 2TB NVMe/PCIe SSD storage.

HP has included in multiple heat dissipation techniques such as HP Omen Tempest cooling system with two 12V fans, multiple thick heat pipes, multiple air intake, and air exhaust openings and Thermal Grizzly liquid metal cooling for the CPU. The latter of the lot is claimed to be used for the first time on a laptop. We will need to spend some more time with the laptop before we can vouch for the efficacy of the system.

Considering, the heavy draw of games and apps we’d throw on this high-end machine, HP has stuffed in a 77whr battery as well.

HP Omen X 2S 15 laptop: Our initial impression

We have already witnessed the dual display treatment on a few other laptops like the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo. However, that in itself can’t entice a gamer. We will see how HP ramps up the applications for the 6-inch panel. Overall, we dig the visual appeal of the laptop and its helluva hardware. No doubt, HP has cranked up the specs for graphics demanding titles. This laundry list of specs should also future proof you for the heavy hitters around the corner.
In India, the HP Omen X 2S starts at a price of INR 2,09,990. Thus once the laptops hit the various online outlets including the HP store from July 1, your buying decision would trickle down to this price as well.
