There was a time when you could freely install apps directly on SD card storage. As android evolved and became more secure, SD card storage became more and more restricted.

Samsung, for one, has always been a staunch believer in extra storage. The company usually adds a dedicated SD card slot on its J-series and A-series phones and the new crop of handsets like Galaxy A7 (2018) and Galaxy J6+ also allow users to shift apps and app content on SD card. Here is what you need to do.

How to move apps or app data or directly install apps on SD card

Step 1: Go to Settings >> Device maintenance.

Step 2: Now, Tap on Storage and select ‘Storage Booster’.

Step 3: Here you will find two options – “Move content to SD card” and “Move apps to SD card”

Step 4: Using Move Apps to SD card, you can select all apps (supported) that you wish to move to SD card to free up space on internal storage

Using “Move content to SD card” you can transfer app data of social media apps like Facebook Messenger to SD card. This option will work for limited apps.

You can also choose to install new apps directly to the SD card.

Should you shift apps on your SD card?

We wouldn’t advise you to move apps you frequently use to SD card until absolutely necessary, though. SD card storage is significantly slower than internal storage on your phone. Having said that, filling your internal storage to the brim is a sure shot way to choke your phone’s performance, and in such situations, you should rather shift apps to SD card, at least the ones that you don’t use frequently.
