How to Get Android Oreo Teardrop Icons on Your Phone

Android Oreo comes with a number of new improvements and features and one such improvement is Adaptive Icons system which allows a user to select from an assortment of icon shapes.

Although Android O gives you the freedom to choose from Round, Squircle, Rounded Square, Square, and Teardrop shape, last option has been the clear favorite of most of the early adopter of Oreo.

Today, there are not too many phones currently running on Android Oreo and it may take few more months before you receive a Google Oreo update from your manufacturer. Till then the best way to get these adaptive icons on your Android 5.0 Lollipop and above running smartphones is Nova Launcher Beta.

Nova Launcher Beta

Nova Launcher is one of the most downloaded third-party launchers on the Google Play Store. In the recent version of Nova Launcher Beta, Telsa Coil ( the company behind Nova Launcher) has introduced Adaptive Icons and now allows users to set Oreo live adaptive icons (teardrop icons) in few simple steps.


Before going through the step-by-step guide on how to setup Android Oreo teardrop icons using Nova Launcher one has to download Nova Launcher Beta 5.5 beta2 version (or above).

There are two ways to do it. Best and recommended way to do get Nova Launcher Beta is by going to Google Play, look up for Nova Launcher install it. Scroll down on Play store page and select Opt-in for Nova Launch Beta.

Another way to become a Nova launcher beta tester by joining their G+ community (link). Teslacoilon its official website has also provided a direct download link. To install from outside PlayStore, one has to go to settings>>security>>turn on install from unknown sources.

How to setup Android Oreo Teardrop Icons using Nova Launcher?

I presume by this time you have installed Nova Launcher on your smartphone and now you are using it as your default launcher.

  1. Long press on home screen to open Nova Launcher setting.  

2. Go to Look & Feel tab and turn on Adaptive Icons (It is disabled by default).

3. Now, go to Adaptive icon style and select teardrop option from the available icon shapes.

4. Make sure open Mask legacy icons is turned on to ensure all the icons are in the new shape.

Voilla! you have successfully set Adaptive Icon if you followed all the steps correctly. If by any chance it didn’t work for you, kindly check if you are using icon pack. To work this perfectly icon pack go to Nova setting>>Look & feel>> Icon Theme, and system icon pack and now it should work perfectly.

Following these simple steps, you can get Adaptive Icons on any Android smartphone. All you have to do is choose your preferred type of adaptive icon and you are good to go.
