Due to the ongoing lockdown, there has been a slump in the demand for new SIM cards and porting requests. To overcome this, telecom companies have already asked the Department of Telecom (DoT) to allow Self-KYC for issuing SIMs. Further, their representing body, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has appealed to DoT for digitizing porting and other services.

Online Application for SIM & Porting requests

In its letter, COAI has proposed the following procedure:

  • The applicant ie, you will have to visit your telecom operator (Jio/Airtel/Vodafone-Idea, etc) and fill in the application.
  • Once the required details are filled, you will have to select the Point of Interface (POI) and Point of Access (POA).
  • Next up, you will have to submit a 5-sec video clip of your face. The built-in artificial intelligence (AI) will automatically pull a still picture out of it.
  • Once everything is done correctly, sit tight as the new SIM cards will be delivered at your doorstep.

Note that, you will be allowed only two connections per day using the Point of Interface and Access Documents. In case you opt for self-pickup, then you will just have to show the POI document along with the OTP you received on your alternate number.
