Huawei online sub-brand, Honor took the wraps off its latest smartphone Honor 7X in India. The phone by the Chinese smartphone maker is the successor of the 6X and has been priced here at a starting range of Rs. 12,999.

Going bold and pricing it at an affordable segment, Honor 7X could surely give other manufacturers a run for their money as the presence of dual-camera with a full-vision display is currently the most sought-after combination in affordable and mid-range smartphones.

In fact, Xiaomi Mi A1 is also currently selling for the same price with a few discounts. So, we decided to pit Honor 7X against Xiaomi Mi A1 for a specs comparison to find out where it stands against current crowd puller.

Note: It is a comparison of Honor 7X base model – 4GB RAM and 32GB storage with Xiaomi Mi A1.

Design and Build

Beginning with the cosmetics, both Honor 7X and Mi A1 flaunt slim metal unibody design with subtly curved corners and Corning Gorilla glass protection, up front. They both make room for dual-cameras on the top-right corner of the rear panel with center aligned fingerprint sensor.

Face up, things are totally different. The Honor 7X has the infinity display surrounded by extremely thin bezels. In comparison, the Mi A1 has the conventional 16:9 display with thick bezels and offscreen navigation buttons.

The Mi A1 used to be the most premium looking phone in its class up to a few months back, but now it certainly feels slighted by modern 18:9 display phones like Honor 7X.

Display

Stressing more on the fascia of both the phones. The Honor 7X has a slightly bigger display than the Mi A1 (5.93-inch vs 5.5-inch), but Honor cleverly adjusts those extra-inches into a compact size by shaving the thick bezels from the top and bottom of the phone.

In terms of sharpness, the Honor 7X 18:9 FHD+ (2160×1440) screen and Mi A1’s FHD (1920X1080 pixel) practically have the same resolution. The use of trendier display lends Honor 7X a clear advantage as well.

Performance and Software

Talking about the innards of the phone, the Honor 7X base model is powered by octa-core Hisilicon Kirin 659 SoC with four cores clocked at 2.53GHz, which is supported by 4GB of RAM and 32GB storage.

In the similar context, the Mi A1 G5S Plus rocks on Snapdragon 625 processor clocked at 2.0GHz, coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage.

Mi A1 is certainly at an advantage here, have a more reliable chipset and double the amount of storage.

One thing that works on Mi A1 favor is that it comes running on Stock-Android Nougat with a promised upgrade to Android Oreo and Android P. Whereas the software on Honor 7X is heavily customized EMUI 5.1 based Android Nougat.

Camera and Battery

Moving to the forte of both the phones – the dual-sensors on the rear.

The dual-rear camera of Honor 7X is backed by a 16MP sensor and a secondary 2MP depth sensor with phase detection autofocus and LED flash. Upfront, it has an 8MP selfie shooter. On the other hand, the Mi A1 packs two 12MP sensors, where the second camera is used for 2X zoom. For selfies, it has a 5MP sensor.

The Mi A1 has more to boast in terms of camera hardware. The ability to take 2X Zoom is certainly rare in this budget. The primary sensor performance is pretty good too.

The power back up of both the Honor 7X and Mi A1 is enough to last for a day. However, the battery in the former is bigger (3450mAh vs 3,080 mAh) than the one on Mi A1.

Verdict

Despite many hurdles, both Honor 7X and Mi A1 managed to cross the finish line. The smartphones are quite close in terms of hardware used.

Who should buy Honor 7X? The base variant of Honor 7X has the advantage of conforming to the trend of 18:9 display. That’s perhaps its biggest advantage compared to the Mi A1.

Who should buy Mi A1? On the other hand, Mi A1 offers light and dependable stock Android software and assured version updates for next couple of years. It’s the better performer of the two and also has the better camera hardware.
