Apple was first to resort to notches, an oddity that was somehow zealously embraced by Android OEMs. These cutouts on Android phones have consistently shrunk over the last two years and have now been mostly reduced to varying punch hole sizes.

Apple, however, has to fit in many pieces of equipment and sophisticated Face ID in its notch and thus has stuck to the same broad size.

Thankfully, the size of the notch on iPhones will shrink moving forward.

New iPhone 12 Design

A new image shared by Jon Prosser, a trusted source for Apple leaks, shows the layout of Face ID components within the smaller notch. Looks like the reduction in size will be made possible by shifting the earpiece to the top bezel.

The sketch, which seems to belong to a user manual, also shows slimmer bezels and power button placement (that remains the same).

We at Smartprix aren’t a fan of notches, and find the uninterrupted screens more pleasant. If anything, we have learned that notches are easy to get used to. We have cycled through numerous shapes and sizes and the cutouts gradually faded into oblivion every time. But yes, we’d agree that the smaller the better.

At the very least, smaller notches will make iPhones less off-putting for people who switch from the Android side of the table.
