Walmart owned Flipkart would be the next biggie to enter the streaming wars. The service would be reportedly free for Flipkart Plus Royalty members. So, it could possibly be called Flipkart Plus Video-Streaming. Ever since Walmart took the mantle in 2018, Flipkart has picked up steam, something which the company heads agree upon. This is aimed to take on Amazon, which is an archnemesis of both Walmart in the U.S. and Flipkart in India.

It will roll out to Flipkart Plus customers by September ahead of the Diwali shopping fests. Coming to the content, Flipkart will license content from Disney and local studios like Balaji Telefilms. So, apparently, it won’t come up with Original shows, at least in the infancy stage.

In contrast, Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos are brimming with original content, many of which are critically and publicly acclaimed. So in time, we foresee a foray of exclusive content on Flipkart service too.

Incidentally, Walmart also owns a video delivery platform called Vudu in the U.S. So, the retail giant might blend the same into Flipkart video streaming service down the line.

For those who don’t know, Flipkart Plus debuted back in August 2018 as a competition against Amazon Prime service. It guarantees faster and free delivery service to buyers along with early access to major Flipkart sales. The scheme has a no-fee membership and choice on rewards.

India is a fertile ground for video streaming services, thanks to the booming smartphone and internet users. The streaming king Netflix recently launched a Mobile-Only plan, exclusively in India. We also expect Disney Plus, HBO Max and the likes to land in India. We will see how the Flipkart Video platform stacks up as an Amazon and Netlfix alternative. As for the audience, more the merrier!
