Soon you will be able to charge your device over the air. A California based firm has designed a wire-free, power-at-a-distance charging technology, called WattUp that requires no physical contact to charge your gadgets.

Energous Corporation, the developer of WattUp, announced that its technology has received the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification. “The FCC certification of Energous’ power-at-a-distance wireless charging transmitter is a major market milestone. It opens up options, outside of just contact-based charging, to Wireless Charging” said Stephen R. Rizzone, president and CEO of Energous.

How Does the WattUp Wireless Charger Operate?

Similar to WiFi, the WattUp wire-free charger comes with a Mid Field Transmitter, which sends the signal to WattUp-enabled electronic devices up to 3ft. The transmitter converts electricity into radio frequencies, which is then fetched by the corresponding receiver for charging.

While older charging technologies allow for only contact-based charging, WattUp is the only charger to achieve true Wireless Charging 2.0 to-date. It holds the ability to charge devices both at contact, as well as at a distance. The firm claims that its WattUp is highly scalable and can automatically charge devices, as needed until they are topped off.

The WattUp can charge multiple devices simultaneously and should work on any number of devices, from phones and tablets to keyboards and earbuds, so long as they’re connected to the right receiver.

WattUp Wire-Free Charger Price and Availability

As of now, there is no information about the price and availability of WattUp Wire-Free Charger. But, the company will demonstrate the latest WattUp technology at CES 2018, the world’s largest consumer electronics show to be held on January 9-12 in Las Vegas.
