Twitter is one of the most widely used micro-blogging platforms around the world. Users of Twitter have since long been asking for an option to “Edit” the tweets they have posted. This is because sometimes, there are typing errors that lead to wrong words or spelling mistakes, and that makes the tweet look incorrect.

The non-existence of an Edit button meant the user had to delete the existing tweet and post it again if they had to correct the error they made. This was very inconvenient for the users and hence the need for an Edit option, which is available on all other platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and more.

Now, this demand of its users is finally being fulfilled as Twitter has officially announced that it is bringing an Edit Tweet option soon. Recently, Twitter’s largest stakeholder posted a poll asking the users if it should bring an edit feature and the results showed people voting for a yes in large numbers.

Soon after, Twitter confirmed that it has been working on the edit feature since last year and this feature is entering the testing phase to launch in a few months. The idea is that it will allow tweeters to fix typos or errors in their posted tweets without having to delete them and post them again.

Twitter has announced that it will test the edit option by launching it for the Twitter Blue subscribers in the coming months to learn what works, what doesn’t, and what’s possible. A video clip has been shared by Twitter’s official handle showing how the edit feature might work on the app.

According to the video, users will be able to see an “Edit Tweet” option within the three-dot menu on the tweet that they want to edit. Clicking this option will allow them to edit/change their tweets.

However, the rolling out of this feature has its roadblocks. Twitter is concerned about the misuse of this feature and thus will take its execution slowly. “Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation. Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work. We will approach this feature with care and thoughtfulness and we will share updates as we go,” said Twitter VP for Consumer product Jay Sullivan.

An edit feature has long been demanded on Twitter, so much so that 1000s of memes have also been made on it. Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was reluctant in introducing such a feature as he felt editing tweets could let users change a tweet’s meaning after it has been shared widely. In 2020, he had claimed that Twitter would probably never add the edit button, but now this seems to be changing.

Elon Musk has recently bought a 9.2% stake in Twitter and is the largest shareholder, Musk asked his Twitter followers if they want an edit button and although CEO Parag Agarwal did tell the users to think of the consequences that will come with this edit button, still a majority of users voted in favor of getting it.
