We have been testing the Dyson Pure Hot+ Cool purifier for about a month now. Dyson claims that its engineers tested hundreds of prototypes and ran over 1148 tests in order to design this multifunction purifier.
So, does all that research work makes a tangible difference at the consumer end? Difference enough for you to consider shelling out a premium price? In our Dyson Pure Hot+ cool purifier review, we will answer all such questions and share our first-hand experience.

Dyson Hot + Cool Puri: Design and features
Dyson follows a unified, tried & tested design language across its purifier range — a language that screams premium. Pure Hot + Cool air purifier doesn’t take too much space and can be placed on the floor or a table (we recommend a low lying table for proper circulation).
It has a cylindrical oscillating base with a perforated mesh shroud on the surface from where the air gets pulled in. The base is where three air quality monitoring sensors and air purification filters are positioned.
The particulate sensor uses an infrared laser and can detect particles larger than 0.3 microns such as pollen and allergens. The VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) sensor detects a wide range of gases such as household odors, formaldehyde, and NO2. And there are sensors to monitor the humidity and temperature of the room.
Dyson claims that this is the only air purifier that has a vacuum-sealed HEPA filter (H13-A) which ascertains that no air escapes in from the edges. The HEPA filter runs 360-degrees around the base and can capture 99.95% of particles as small as 0.1 microns.
The air is next channeled inside via a Carbon filter that has 300 grams of activated carbon and according to stats provided by Dyson, this is enough surface area to cover 40 football fields.
Both of these filters can last for 365 days or a year with 12 hours of usage per day. All real-time air quality stats and filter health are shown on the tiny color screen of the purifier. You can access the filter by pushing down two buttons. Filter replacement is extremely simple and can be done without any tools or professional help.
Once the two filters clean the air of particulate matter and harmful gases, the next objective is to project this clean air as far away as possible. The air propulsion mechanism is what majorly differentiates Dyson Air Purifiers from other affordable options.
If the air purifier doesn’t have a proper mechanism to dispel the clean air far away, it may end up sucking back the purified air or make a bubble of fresh air around itself that doesn’t cover the entire room.
For the purpose, Dyson employs its patented Air multiplier technology inspired by airflow mechanisms in jet engines. The purifier uses a blade-less fan tower that can project a stream of air farther away as compared to other purifiers. Dyson uses a DC motor for the fan to avoid carbon dust.
Dyson Pure Hot + Cool air purifier has an airflow of 310 liters/seconds when the fan is set to 10. The air multiplier tower can also rotate at 45-degree, 90-degree, 180-degree, or entire 350-degrees in order to sweep wider areas.
If you don’t wish the air to be directly projected at you (in winters), you can press the diffuser button that channels the air out from the broader rear slit.
The sleek remote control for the purifier magnetically clings to the top and that really helped us avoid losing it within our home.
The design is also child-friendly. In fact, the base stand is also topple-free, which is to say it doesn’t topple easy. If you have kids running amock at home and they accidentally butt the purifier, chances are that it will oscillate back in an upright position!

Tested to rigid standards: CADR vs POLAR test
Instead of using CADR (Clean Air Delivery Report) test which is the current industry standard in India, Dyson developed a more stringent POLAR Test that is a better representation of practical real-world scenarios.
The CADR test has been around since the 1980s and required the purifier to be positioned at the center of a small 12 sq. meter room. There is only one air quality sensor in the room to detect the change in pollution levels and the ceiling fan is kept on during the test to help with air circulation.
On the other hand, Dyson’s POLAR test is conducted in a bigger 27 square meter (around 290 sq. ft) room where the purifier is positioned in a corner and is not aided by any ceiling fan. That’s a bit more realistic because the peak pollution season in India is in winter when we don’t use ceiling fans.
Pollutants are then added from the opposite corner and there are nine air quality sensors places in all corners of the room including one sensor in the center, to understand the exact air quality in the different parts of the room at all times. To further ensure their effectiveness, Dyson tests its purifier in auto mode.
Dyson representative also told Smartprix that its particulate sensors match the levels read from EPA verified equipment and have been independently verified by experts in London and Beijing to correlate with the sophisticated outdoor air quality measurement stations used to report national air quality levels.

Dyson Hot + Cool Purifier Review: Performance and Features
The Hot + Cool purifier supports dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 and can be wirelessly controlled via the beautifully designed Dyson Link app (Android and iOS) and also using the Alexa powered Echo devices (No Google Assistant support yet).
The app relays and records air quality data of your room. You may also use the Dyson Link App to schedule your purifier to turn on and off at any specific time during the week.
By pressing the ‘i’ button on the remote, you can toggle between real-time readings of particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), gaseous pollutants (VOC, NO2), room temperature, humidity, and filter health.
While it was not possible for us to objectively measure the accuracy of air quality stats, we could very well test how the Air Monitoring sensors reacted to changes.
We installed the machine in one corner of our bedroom and switched off our ceiling fan. It took around 30 minutes for the PM10 indicator to go from red (110 µg/m3) to green (29 µg/m3). After another hour we positioned the purifier in the diagonally opposite corner of the room, and the purifier still showed green which clearly indicated that the air in the opposite corner had also been cleaned. Next, we opened the door and reduced the fan speed. The readings shot up to orange (
54 µg/m3) in around 25 minutes.
Similarly, when we had a beautician waxing and grooming my better half in the room, I noticed that VOC, NO2 which were basically nonexistent in the room shot up and so did the particulate matter (to severe).
After a fortnight of usage, we removed the Hepa Filter and noticed that the outer surface had accumulated dust and the inside layer was titch clean.
The month we have spent with the Dyson purifier assures us that it makes a significant difference to the air quality in our bedroom. We usually have it running during night time. We’d advise you to run the fan at high speed with sweep turned on for at least 1 hour before you switch to the quieter night mode. Auto mode is what we prefer during the day.
In the Hot mode, the Dyson purifier could evenly head up our room. In our testing, it took around 1 hour for the purifier to elevate temperature from 32-degrees to 37-degrees (maximum).

What makes the Dyson Hot + Cool Air purifier stand apart from the run of the mill purifiers is that it is a much more thoughtfully designed product. Dyson pays meticulous attention to details and adheres to stringent testing standards, giving consumers a much-needed assurance that they are indeed in good hands and are breathing healthier air.
The design is premium, customer support is excellent and Air quality indicators and purification are very effective. We have tried and tested several affordable Air purifiers in the past but none of them enthuse such confidence and at times it’s hard to ascertain if we are indeed getting an objective analysis of air quality.
