Canon has confirmed that they will be launching the most powerful mirrorless camera, Canon EOS R1 later in 2024. It will be a full-frame mirrorless camera which will be the flagship model for the EOS R Ecosystem with RF mounts. Speculations about this camera have been rife since 2021, but it is only today that the launch has been confirmed for late 2024. However, its specs are still shrouded in mystery as not many details are available about it.

Canon has confirmed that the processing power for the camera will come from a system that combines a brand new processor called Digic Accelerator with the existing Digic X engine, with this combo then paired with a new CMOS sensor.
The resolution of the sensor is still unknown but Canon has said that it has achieved high speed and high accuracy subject recognition with this system and some advanced deep learning tech. As an example, the brand has quoted focus locking on a single target in a team sport, which isn’t anything new as it is already seen in the Servo AF characteristic on EOR R3.
What will be new will include a new AF system that will recognize the subject’s movements and lock in on a team member performing a specific action, shifting focus when necessary with a feature called Action Priority. This will reduce the number of missed opportunities a photographer regrets and thus come in handy for the professional.

Canon claims image quality will be improved as well. It doesn’t share more details about how it will be done but reports claim it might be due to a new sensor.
The company has confirmed that EOS R1 is currently in the testing stage and will be announced in 2024, maybe just in time for the Paris Olympics 2024 which will be held in the last week of July. For the public, the camera will launch by the end of 2024.
Canon has also committed to expanding the EOS R System lineup with more captivating cameras and RF lenses that will cater to diverse user needs and contribute to the evolution of photography and videography.
